Long one :-/
We hired a dog sitter who was recommended by another dog sitter in our town.
Spoke on the phone, sounded fine, he was available and his rates were very very reasonable
He came over with paperwork and to meet our puppy. Showed us his public liability and insurance paperwork which was all current etc
He knew we had to leave at 5.30am to get to a christening and it was agreed he would come over at 8.30, walk our dog twice during the day and leave at 3.30 because we were due home at 4.30ish...
So we are running slightly late and getting in the car around 5.40am and up pops the dog walker... He decided to walk to dog early !!! At 5.40am ?? (well 4.40 if the clocks hadn't gone forward) I felt very uneasy about it couldn't quite shake the feeling he was up to something.. Why turn up 3 hours early at the crack of dawn when your only getting paid £15 for the day anyway. To me it didn't make any sense... We got home around 4.00pm ish. He'd gone but he hadn't left our house key and left the back door unlocked.
2 days later and we are still waiting for the key. I'm starting to panic now that some weird man has got my house key. AIBU to be freaked out by this ????

Yes, weird - presumably you've phoned him and he's not got back?

Is anything missing from the house? He would have had plenty of time to look through stuff, so keep an eye on your bank account?

And if nothing else, it's unprofessional.

Keep phoning, then could you send your DP/DH round to collect the key??

Newtothisstuff · 27/03/2012 09:46

Thank god someone agrees
He smelt really bad as well I could smell him on the sofa Sad
I made DH move any thing of any value
I've been paranoid and double locked all
The doors of an evening
But yes it's very unprofessional
My DH is a police man (although I'm not sure the dog sitter was aware of that)
He is definitely picking on the wrong family if he has done anything
If the key isn't back by tonight I'll be getting DH to call his colleagues
Weird weird weird.. I thought maybe he doesn't have anywhere to live and figured seeing as we were leaving at 5.30am he could get a warm house and sky tv for the day haha

Sorry, thinking on this I'm probably being a bit paranoid on your behalf Grin!

If he's an established dog-sitter, then possibly he's just a little odd (but 4.40am??) -- but it's definitely not on to hold onto your keys.

Perhaps once you have them back, gently point this out??!

Newtothisstuff · 27/03/2012 09:58

I'm paranoid all on my own. My DH thinks I've gone mad. Especially after I was laying in bed suggesting he might be living in our loft or might have put cameras up haha
I'm sure he will bring them back today.. I also don't get how he can make any money from spending the whole day in someone's house looking after their dog for £15 !! But hey I don't suppose that's any of my business lol
