Does your dog howl in its sleep ?

My lab asleep this afternoon ,on the sofa Blush ,starts howling in her sleep - really bizarre - she has done its once before at night when we were in bed and she was downstairs - wondered what earth was going on !

Its quite a low solemn sounding howl and sounds rather sad - but I assume its just her dreaming .

Have you experienced this ?

One of ours barks in his sleep quite often, though it comes out as a strange yelpy bark that sounds nothing like his usual deep woof.

He did do a very loud, low 'unearthly' sounding howl in his sleep one night, woke up me and DP and after a moment thinking 'what on earth was that noise' we rushed to him thinking something must be wrong. Turned out he was fine, and probably wondering what we were doing waking him up in the middle of the night!

I think it's just dreaming! Like when their feet twitch and their legs 'run' :)

Our lab has done that a couple of times. Both times he has been fast asleep on his bed in the living room, then lifted his head and howled, then opened his eyes and looked really confused. It was very difficult not to laugh. Grin

Luckily, he has never done it at night.

He howls very rarely - only really when he's had a big fright - so I have no idea what he's been dreaming about.....

Yes our big girl does, and when she was a pup she'd sleep with her tongue out a little between her front teeth and make sucking noises just like she was feeding, it was so so cute. She's 15mths now and only does it occasionally but her sleep is still very animated. She whines, woofs and twitches her legs, sometime her paws are curled over and flicking as if she is running in her dream, it really is quite entertaining :-)

Our 5 month cocker still does the suckling in his sleep :) He also barks, and cycles his legs in the air. He then usually does a big trump and wakes himself up :(

I love it when they wag their tails in their sleep ......wish I knew what they were dreaming about

I googled about dogs howling in sleep - came up with

''Sleep And Dreams
As far as the howling in their sleep or their barking at night during sleep is concerned, dogs actually dream! They could well be dreaming of catching a cat or a mouse and hence the excited barking, and if they are terrorized by a nightmare wherein they are being attacked, they howl! ''

How do they know the dog is having a nightmare ! Confused
