Ikea duvet, folded in half inside an Ikea duvet cover. Cheap, easy to launder, comfy, can be nested in if that's what your dog likes, portable, easy to replace. I wash the dog duvet covers weekly and the duvets themselves usually every four to six weeks.

Sounds a good idea, got a rather ancient greyhound who needs/likes comfort and settee and my bed getting difficult to climb onto!
Seen some expensive beds that are not washable which i find odd

Well, if it's an ancient greyhound, then I'd suggest a sort of duvet mille-feuille and stack a couple, so things are nice and comfy.
