That's just it really, thought we should have one.

What are the Do's and Don'ts of dog walking?

My wish would be that dog owners would keep an eye on what their dogs are doing. Instead they often stride on ahead and then have no idea what their dog is doing whether it is toiletting or being too rough with other dogs/puppies. Then when they finally notice they are missing their dog, they turn around and are too far to get their dog to recall when their dog has pinned my puppy to the floor. IMO they should be responsible for their dog just like I remain responsible for my puppy. Just because a dog is fully grown does not mean they don't have to supervise.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 17/03/2012 19:40

I find that labs and also spaniels are the worst for pestering Sprocket. He hates them poor love.

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 17/03/2012 19:57

I had a dog called Sprockett too Grin

GrittersWifeAndProud · 17/03/2012 19:59

Cool :o I saw the name on here actually, on a funny pet names thread a while ago and it stuck with me ever since!

Is it OK to hang your bag of poo somewhere, to collect at the end of a walk?

I do this sometimes if I am at the very start of a long walk with no poo bins and I don't want to swing a shit handbag for an hour or more.

I do always collect it though.

signet2012 · 17/03/2012 20:10

I do If I'm on the beach. I hang it on the railing or leave it on the step in the bag. I do always pick it back up as there is not a poo bin anywhere near where we are allowed on the beach with dogs. (stupidly) I too do not wish to carry my dogs "post car drive poo" which is the fruitiest and largest of poos round with me for a hour. I am always in view of the bag so could shout if needed to let people know its mine as we walk so far one way away from the steps and then follow the water back. Not sure where I would stand with the council on this mind.....it is normally late and we are normally only people about.

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 17/03/2012 20:12

I got the name Sprockett off a TV program called Fraggle Rock

TheDetective · 17/03/2012 20:15

Wow, I didn't know there were so many rules. Glad we don't go where any other dogs are! Shuffles of thread

Honeydragon · 17/03/2012 20:24

I have now developed a sudden insight why people think my laid back quite well trained lab is public property.

If your dog repeatedly attempts to rape a bitch, yes it is a problem, yes she will attack him and yes you should be able to recall your dog at all times even this. Put him in a lead and stop chatting to your friends.

Yes - I agree thunderbolt, puppies have to learn and aren't born with perfect recall. We ought to be a bit more tolerant where pups are concerned and the owner is trying their best

ChickensHaveNoLips · 17/03/2012 21:33

I find that most people are tolerant of my pup when he cocks up, as long as I apologise and deal with him quickly.

QuietOhSoQuiet · 17/03/2012 21:42

I have a sprollie (border colliexspringer) and she is a little minx so she stays firmly on the lead.I recently let her off to romp around the field but a terrier x dog would not leave her alone so she pinned them to the ground and bared teeth at him,so she stays on the lead. She is fine if the other dog leaves her alone but I can't take the risk so she stays leashed the whole time :(

So if you see a dog leashed please either recall your pooch or put them on the lead to save the agro

QuietOhSoQuiet · 17/03/2012 21:44

oh yes and should of said I clean up my poop but refuse to walk with it for whole walk so put it on roadside and reverse walk following day and collect it then :o

outmonday · 17/03/2012 21:50

I had a dog who hated black labs and was told it's common, dogs can't read the expression on all-black faces. Mine also hates one with hair all over his face, you can't tell which end of him is which.
Bully for you owners of perfectly-trained dogs. Please accept that some breeds are stupid/stubborn/hard to train and that any dog can misbehave.

Catsmamma · 17/03/2012 21:53

and if you arrive on the middle of the beach, do not cut in front of me and proceed to walk the same way! you illmanneredtwat rude person. I was there FIRST and its blatantly obvious I am walking that way.

And you folks that only go in the summer to the beach....I am there every godammed day so don't tut when the dogs turn out a lovely pile, or cock a leg, at least I pick up, unlike you and your crisp packets/cock cans/broken bottles.

Catsmamma · 17/03/2012 21:54

oooh dear!! edit for above... it's blatantly and COKE cans.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 17/03/2012 21:55

It quite amuses me that my dog hates black labs, he's black himself :o

Redwing, I completely understand that and when someone genuinely apologises it's fine. Smile
What really drives me mad are the idiots who either are completely unaware of what their dog is doing/where it is because they are listening to their ipod, talking on the phone, or gassing with other people; or the ones who have let their dogs off lead, knowing they have poor recall, and then expecting me to be a happy bunny when my dogs are upset or hurt.

Didn't know cocks came in cans!! Grin

RedwingWinter · 18/03/2012 19:32

Thanks Scuttle :).

Yes that annoys me too. Today we deliberately went to walk somewhere that dogs are supposed to be on-lead, to make life easier for Dog2, and wouldn't you know lots of people had their dogs off-lead and running around with balls. They looked really smug about it too. Idiots.

The people we met with out-of-control on-lead dogs were all apologetic about it and that was all fine.

shoutymcshoutsmum · 18/03/2012 19:43

Today I asked someone if they would mind calling their dog away as it had pinned my puppy to the ground. He told me he wouldn't as they were only playing. That may be the case but if the dog is 4 times the size, I think I have a right to politely ask and then my opinion be considered!! I'm getting really fed up with arrogant dog owners who think they always know best. Hrrumph. Going to go make a cup of tea.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 18/03/2012 20:42

My pet hate is 'He's only playing!'

Well mine doesn't play with other dogs. That's why he is wearing a muzzle and on the lead, with his tail between his legs, shaking and growling. And if I took the muzzle off he'd EAT your dog. So call your dog off or come get him and apologise. And we're sweet again.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 18/03/2012 20:51

Ah, last post was rather aggressive. Apologies. I just get fed up with my (muzzled) dog always being labelled the difficult one because of the precautions I take to make him safe towards other dogs. He's not bad. He's just really scared of other dogs and with love and patience he'll get there in the end!

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 18/03/2012 21:27

MissBetsy I have similar issues!

'He's only playing!'

Oh yes so he was now he's screaming and whining as my dog has bitten him...Oh now it's my fault because even though my dog was on her lead and we were walking away, she was the one who was aggressive when your dog came right up to her!....Angry
