Any tips for helping a dog settle into a new home?

My sister is having a baby and I am taking her dog for an unspecified amount of time. He's a lovely lovely dog, about 5 years old. I know he'll be fine here, and I'm looking forward to having him- But I keep thinking what a trauma it'll be for him, and was wondering whether any of you know of anything that may make him settle here.

Thank you :)

Ask your sister to bring his basket/bed and a favourite toy/blanket. Get in some novel treats or a new toy he can play with so he makes a positive association with your home. Good Luck Smile

Perhaps your sister can give one of her worn clothes, and you can put it in the dog basket, so he has her familiar smell with him?

Also a lovely dog treat/ his favourite foods when he arrives at your place should help put him in a positive frame of mind!

Thanks for the advice! His bed and blanket will be coming with him, and I'll get him a few treats. I can't wait now! I'm trying to prepare DS1, who is a bit anxious, as well, but I know he'll be okay once the dog gets here.
Thanks for all the advice- Much appreciated.

how exciting for you all. A house trained, well rounded dog that you already know first hand. And how lovley for your sister that she can still see her boy Smile. It seems like a win - win situation .Smile

I hope it goes well Allergic! A part of me is beyond excited, and another part is a bit nervous about the whole thing...

it's a massive commitment. Do you work?

I work from home, when my children are asleep. On paper, we have the perfect lifestyle for a dog. I just hope he settles here.

I am sure he'll be fine, any chance of a couple of day visits so he eases into your house?

I was thinking a new bed at yours, they could come for a visit, with toys and blankets which get left at yours, and then they all go home. Gives him chance to suss out places and when he comes again his stuff will still be there. Good luck!

Not really possible, I'm afraid- He lives abroad! He has been here before for long visits, and has always settled in well. He's arriving on Sunday, so not long to wait now. I think I'll take him for a nice long walk so he's nice and tired, and not wound up, on his first night here.
