watch live here- excellent agility later about 13.40 - you may see a mnetter

daisyrain · 11/03/2012 20:39

Im thinking of running round the lounge with my lovely dog & telling him, hes won 'Best in show'
Hes bound to believe me, if I give him a treat :)

Emmielu · 11/03/2012 20:45

Have they cut out some groups? Im sure it lasted at least 1 week last year?? Its only lasted 3 days. Which is a shame. I love having a real good look at all the breeds.

Was sad when I saw that documentary about the inbreeding that goes on in some of the dogs, and the health problems this causes. Alot of pugs have breathing problems because their faces are so flat. Boxers are prone to kidney problems. I used to like seeing dogs and crufts, but now I see crufts as a bit of a victorian freak show for dogs, with little or no regard for the welfare of the animals. There is a lot of money involved in winning crufts and breeding dogs.

Emmielu · 12/03/2012 11:46

Gemtubbs - what documentary was that?

No Crufts has only ever been three days.

I hate the breeding but there is so much more to Crufts than show dogs.

Rescue dogs, PAT dogs, APDT, Assistance Dogs, Agility, Positive training displays, flyball, search and rescue, etc

swooosh · 12/03/2012 12:13

Sad the Beagle didn't get through to Best in Breed. :(

which dog won? Didn't watch past the hound group.

Mrsjay · 12/03/2012 12:32

A laso apso won with the newfoundland second I wanted himt o win the KC and crufts not have independent vets come in and check all qualifying dogs for any genetic and health problems ,

yesbutnobut · 12/03/2012 14:48

Emmielu - the documentary is called Pedigree Dogs Exposed and I think you can watch it on youtube or try googling it to try to find a link to it.

RedwingWinter · 12/03/2012 16:58

I loved watching the agility. Those courses were so tough! It was nail-biting stuff.

Kayzr · 12/03/2012 17:04

Crufts has always been 4 days hasn't it? Starts Thursday and finishes Sunday. I am gutted we couldn't go this year.

I wanted the Newfoundland to win but I did like the Lhasa Apso.

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 12/03/2012 17:13

I wanted the Pomeranian to win because it was excited, friendly and happy and was being a bit naughty Grin I don't normally like those tiny fluffball dogs but it made me laugh!

AnEcumenicalMatter · 12/03/2012 17:31

Crufts is always 4 days: 2 groups per day for 3 days. (terrier & hound, working & pastoral, toy & utility) plus one day for findings since they are such a huge group in themselves.

I thought the Borzoi was a worthy winner and although I am very biased towards Newfoundlands, I'm a little bit glad he didn't win. Crufts winners sometimes become the next 'must have' breed and they are truly not the breed for everyone, however appealing that may look. We already have a big enough rescue problem because people take them on as puppies without realising the level of work and commitment (and cost!) required for their whole life.

AnEcumenicalMatter · 12/03/2012 17:34

And I'm not a small dog lover at all but I thought both the Pom and the mini Dachshund were fabulous little characters.

mycatsaysach · 12/03/2012 17:35

llasha apso won best in show - that's probably spelled completely wrong

AnEcumenicalMatter · 12/03/2012 17:37

God, I meant the Lhasa! Don't know where Borzoi came from!

Kayzr · 12/03/2012 17:41

I saw a Borzoi today in town actually. First time I have ever seen one outside of Crufts.

My Nans neighbour always had Poms when I was growing up. I used tto love going to play with them

I know someone with a Newfoundland. He got him from a rescue when he was about a year old. Apparently the previous owners had done loads of research but weren't expecting him to be so big. What on earth they researched I don't know.

mycatsaysach · 12/03/2012 17:42

my great aunt used to have a borzoi

AnEcumenicalMatter · 12/03/2012 17:54

My friend has Borzois and I was talking to her earlier about the group winner which is why I think I had it in my head when posting about the Lhasa winning.

Kayzr, most Newfs that come into rescue are around a year old...just as they are almost fully grown, eating you out of house and home and pushing their luck in the teenage phase. Although the mind does boggle that people had supposedly researched but didn't realise how big he would grow!

Kayzr · 12/03/2012 18:45

We saw a couple of gorgeous Newfies on the beach at New years. My DP loves them but we thought our house was a bit too small for one. So we've got a golden retriever.

My Mum has a Leonberger and one of his siblings ended up back with the breeder at about 1.

multipoodles · 12/03/2012 20:20

Crufts is always 4 days: 2 groups per day for 3 days. (terrier & hound, working & pastoral, toy & utility) plus one day for findings since they are such a huge group in themselves.

There are 7 groups, you forgot the gundogs had a day all to themselves :)

AnEcumenicalMatter · 12/03/2012 20:35

oops...gundogs apparently autocorrected to 'findings'. It should say '...plus one day for gundogs. Would love to blame my phone but I evidently don't proof read either Blush

Slubberdegullion · 12/03/2012 20:39

I thought maybe findings was on the Monday when they went round and picked up all the turds left behind, since they are a huge group in themselves.

AnEcumenicalMatter · 12/03/2012 20:45

Grin Slubber

Slubberdegullion · 12/03/2012 20:48

'Findings' is so genteel. v KC.
