Does this sound expensive for an operation?

Last week my uncle's dogwhas been taken in for an emergency hysterectomy as she had pyometra. She is a large-ish labrador, she was in the vets for a day, had the operation, a drip, painkillers and anti-bios and the bill was £725.00. I am no expert but that seems a tad expensive to me, what are other peoples thoughts please?

Doesn't sound that expensive to me, particularly given the various drugs she will have needed as well. I'm guessing she probably needed some sort of blood work done before op, and if it was out of hours, that too will have bumped up the cost. Were any Xrays, scans etc performed?

In any case, vets always supply itemised bills (well, ours do) and we are used to having foster dogs whose bills need to be reclaimed back to the charity. If there is anything on the itemised bill yr uncle does not understand, or is not clear about, he should ask the practice to explain.

Does yr uncle have insurance?

Depends where the vets are, big city...normal.

Is he insured? Hope so.

Cheap, IMO.

It's a life threatening emergency and from what I understand, can be a very difficult operation.

I'd expect a bill in that region, for that type of op. It's not just a straightforward spay.

Thanks very much for all the responses, my uncle will feel a bit better knowing that it is normal to cost that amount, he'll just have to clear out his savings account Sad

Just about right I quote £650 to £850 for pyo surgery. Unfortunate fact the bigger the dog the bigger the bill as drugs are used weight. If it helps I had surgery two weeks at private hospital I was there two hours in theatre for 15mins only drug used local anaesthetic no drip total bill £1500.
