Jasper seems a bit off colour. He's eating, drinking, toileting normally, but seems quite lethargic. He keeps retreating to quiet corners and sleeping instead of bouncing about causing mayhem. And when I fed the DC, he laid on the back step looking sad instead of trying to steal their sausages. Every so often, he mooches about with a toy, but he isn't himself. I thought he was limping slightly this morning, but haven't seen him do it since. He was fine on his walks, but they were both on lead so couldn't really judge enthusiasm. I can't see anything obvious, no vomiting, whining, scratching etc. If he shows no signs of returning to his bouncy self in the morning, I think we'll be off to the vet

Check his pads really carefully for thorns. Mine are like this when they've picked up a rose thorn. From what you describe I'd say something somewhere hurts.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 05/03/2012 20:40

Just had a look at his pads with a torch, and couldn't see anything. He has some quite deep cracks in his pads, but nothing in them and they don't seem to hurt (I was super gentle, but assume he'd react if they were sore?). He's very food focused, and we normally have a nightmare eating our meals as he's a dreadful thief. Tonight, DH has eaten a roast chicken dinner on his lap in the living room, and Jasper barely looked at him. That's a huge signal to me that something isn't right. He is drinking and did eat his dinner, just with less gusto than usual. Every so often he has a little go at being himself, and then lays down again. His nose is hot and dry, but I don't know if that's really a reliable indicator.

I'd keep an eye on him at home- make sure gets plenty of water, (could do cooked rice with rice water) and still toileting normally, if he doesn't pick up maybe ring the vets. Can you look at his gums? Should be nice and pink.

Disclaimer; I don't really know what I'm on about, my pup came down with a bug a few weeks ago, ended up with a cough, my vet was great and let me treat at home with cough syrup and TLC!! usually they just grab my money with glee

ChickensHaveNoLips · 05/03/2012 21:33

His gums look normal, eyes clear and not red. Hmm. He is choosing to sleep in his bed rather than on the sofa , something he's allowed to do in the evenings. I'll be up at the crack of dawn checking on him, and if he seems no better I'll definitely call the vet. This is just like when the DC were tiny and you knew something was up but they couldn't tell you

Hope he's ok overnight, let us know in the morning.

Thanks potty :) Cor, it's crazy how much you can love the hairy, farty, chewy little sods, isn't it?

How is he this morning Chickens?

When was he last wormed?

ChickensHaveNoLips · 06/03/2012 12:17

He seems a lot better, thank God. He had some nasty diarrhea just after his breakfast, but since then he has been charging about like a nutjob and generally being hard work (as every 8 month old puppy with spaniel tendencies should be Grin). He was last wormed at the end of January, so I don't think he's due again until the end of April. I didn't take him on the school run this morning, because of the upset tummy, and now he's bouncing off the walls! So, we'll be heading out for a long stroll before I pick up the DC.

So good to hear he is fine chicken

Mine gets like that ever so often. She loves to scavenge and I know if she gets listless it is because she ate some crap somewhere. And I get especially Angry as she will sometimes refuse homemade broth and rice and instead look for some smelly food near the garbage that makes her sick.

Right now she is being a real madam. Refuses to have water, only water mixed with goats milk. And will eat roast chicken, but leave the rice. Refuses fish, unless it is sardines and will eat only linguini, not penne. She is going to get a rude shock when the puppies are weaned, because then it is back to plain food, instead of treats everyday. Grin
