DH is distraught as the dogs have always been "his", but we had the vet visit this morning and so managed a stress free send off in the garden.

I feel guilty as I have been really stressed about dealing with the incontinence, but he had 12 good years and we did the best we could for as long as we could.

He was so huge though, so is a lot to miss :(

Many sympathies Milliways. Have a good old cry. So sorry for you.

We had to put our dog to sleep last week and we have been devastated.

SecretNutellaFix · 28/02/2012 19:33

I'm so sorry. At least he went in familiar surrounding with people who loved him.

Milliways · 28/02/2012 20:02

Thank you both. I have poured some wine for DH (& me!).

Sorry for your loss.

We had our 14 yr old dog pts last year. It was absolutely her time (& then some!). We were all terribly sad, especially my DH, but it was also a relief. She had been doubly incontinent and that's hard to live with, much as you love them. (She had many other serious problems too)

ChickensHaveNoLips · 28/02/2012 20:07

So sorry for your loss :( How lucky he was to have people that loved him enough to make him comfortable to the very end x

Milliways · 28/02/2012 20:23

Thank you all.

milli, we are days away from this with our old girl - trying her on antibiotics as a last ditch attempt but its not looking good - it feels like a really "grown up" decision to take for a member of our family.

Slubberdegullion · 28/02/2012 21:04

Sad sorry for your loss x

Moomoomie · 28/02/2012 21:18

So sorry. Our beloved border collie went to doggie heaven last summer at the great age of 15.
I still miss her every single day.

Milliways · 28/02/2012 21:26

Sorry to hear that Hatti.

I keep thinking "If that was my parent we wouldn't send them to Switzerland" :(

I have been cleaning and feel as if I am removing bits of him (pawprints, muddy towels etc).

Crossed posts - Sorry for you too Moomoomie. 15 was a fantastic age.

So sorry for you all with the losses of your beloved dogs.

We went through this last September, just heartbreaking. Sad

(((HUGS)))

Winkly · 28/02/2012 21:35

I've been there. It was 3 years ago now. I don't think I could ever have another dog but now I can look back on my lovely Jess and be happy about the times we had with her instead of being sad. You deserve that Wine tonight.

DorothyGherkins · 28/02/2012 21:42

Nothing ever prepares you for how you will feel, does it. It hits you like a sledge hammer. I ve been through this four times now, and it never gets any easier. But they always stay in a special place in your heart. I always recommend people who have just suffered a loss to read this: petloss.com/rainbowbridge.htm

Scuttlebutter · 28/02/2012 23:33

So sorry. Sad

You were able to give her your love in a very practical and courageous way one last time, by allowing her to pass away quietly and peacefully at home in a loving environment. I would be proud to do this for our dogs - you have ensured an ending that was right for her.

Wishing you peace and strength in the days ahead - the grief is the terrible price we pay for the love and happiness that is shared.

pinkyp · 28/02/2012 23:35

Sorry for your loss. You gave them love & cared for them- you made them happy and they gave you happy memory's in return Smile

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 28/02/2012 23:36

I am very sorry. Sad

We lost our 6 year old Weimaraner very suddenly and brutally last year. My parents had their 14yo Springer PTS after a long bout of cancer last week.

Whichever way you lose them, it rips a dog shaped hole in your heart.

ThatVikRinA22 · 28/02/2012 23:43

bumpybecky · 28/02/2012 23:48

I'm so sorry :( it's 13 months on for us and it's not as painful as it was. Be kind to yourself over the next few weeks :(
