Do your dogs sleep on the back of the sofa?

Mine (a Westie) will not sleep on the proper seat of all our couches (unless we're sitting on them too) but must perch on the top, curled up like a cat. WHY does she do this? I'm not precious about the furniture at all (even though all the back cushions are ruined misshapen now) but I can't understand the appeal of snoozing somewhere so uncomfortable when she's got perfectly comfortable beds carefully positioned in cozy locations throughout the house. Proper weirdo, she is Grin.

Obviously she likes it there and wouldn't do it if she wasn't comfortable x
Our dog loves lying on us on the sofa, but he's getting a bit big and heavy for it now!

One of my Dad's dogs does and she drapes her legs around you. I often end sitting in their house with a blond whippety scarf. It's very cosy.

PeanutButterChocolate · 21/02/2012 17:34

It is cute and she does make a nice headrest Grin She probably finds it a good vantage point for surveying the garden for squirrels and the neighbour's cat who likes to taunt her by walking along our fence post. I think she's worried about missing something if she got down to nap elsewhere...

Jasper does this and stuffs his head down the back of the cushion. This makes him invisible, you see Hmm Grin

My dog (banned from the sofa in our house) does this at my Mums if she looks after her - I think it is because her eye level is at the same level as the window so she can see out without moving. She's not a small dog either - think large collie sized.

PersonalClown · 21/02/2012 17:43

My rather large Labradoodle does this. He's like a scarf with legs draped either side of you.

Good job he's adorable or I'd kick him off. Can't let the Staffy do it. He's all elbows and stabby paws!!Grin

my border terrier does this.. it's just the right height to look out of the window and he's out of the way of ds2 when he's being a ninja in the middle of the floor )

Ours does that. Do any of the dogs who do it prefer to be left and not be overly touched. I thought ours did it because of that reason, or is this part of the, who is the dominant person in the room.

Oops

ChickensHaveNoLips · 21/02/2012 21:17

Nah, Jasper does it because he thinks we can't see him and will let him stay there. Muppet

Beamur · 21/02/2012 21:32

I think my dog does it solely to have a good view out into the garden whilst being comfy at the same time. She is a friendly and not aloof dog at all and would like much more fuss than she gets.

PeanutButterChocolate · 21/02/2012 21:35

I've heard that theory, deste but Peanutbutterdog would basically do anything for pats and affection so I don't think it's an avoidance strategy. Westies are obviously stature-challenged so perhaps she enjoys the feeling of being "big". I do believe she thinks herself to be DC #4 so perhaps she wants to put herself on-level with the children.

Our dog has short legs as well so it could be that.

LottieJenkins · 22/02/2012 21:49

Our old dog Sally a jr/patterdale used to............she would hear the door go bang and jump off and look innocent. We would know because she hd split the zip of the cushion which was still warm and covered in black fur! Grin
Bumble walks round the back of the sofa to avoid us!! Wink

OoohMrCoyne · 27/02/2012 00:21

Yep - Chi JRT + does it - best view out of front window so he can see people coming and bark at them!
