Dog put on lots of weight but it does not show.

Got dog at the vet's because of upset tummy - dog seems to be thinking if it's there it should be eaten, whatever it might be - and they weighed him for the pills.
Turns out he's put on 10 pounds, for the last couple of months or so. Except it does not show, much.
vet mentioned sometimes it happens when the spleen is enlarged, checked and said that's not the case.
Has anyone had any experience with this?
I'm puzzled. We have changed his food in the last months, but surely 10 pounds is far too much?

Ten pounds does sound like a lot. I don't know about this, but I thought I'd give it a bump for you in case someone else does. Is the dog still getting the same amount of exercise? Do you think it is to do with the food?

Might well have been the food - it was the light version previously, and I switched that to the mature one.
I thought the mature food ought to lighter, also, to prevent middle age spread and so on.
Still, it's an awful lot - and that in three months.
I'll see, we'll get back on the light, cut down on treats and go on longer walks.
See what happens, might talk to vet again.

what kind of dog is it? 10 pounds to a sausage dog for example would be an ENORMOUS weight increase

Muscle weighs more than fat, so could it be that he has turned into an athlete?

i'd sa keep an eye on it - how old is he?

Big and middle aged.
Went from 37 to 42 kg.
Definitely not an athlete.
But it does not show, honestly.
I would just accept he's got fat - and get him in shape, but I cannot see how.
Vet double checked the scales - so that's not a help either.

okay, so he is quite a big dog..and they do get a bit more weighty as they get older.....having said that, if you can't see it, it does sound odd.

Could it be that the last time you weighed him, he had eaten/drunk a fair bit and not been for his ablutions, but that on the first occasion he came to the vets a while after breakfast and just after a walk?

No, we went to the ver because of runny tummy, so no.
Thanks for help, I'll watch him, will weigh him in months time and if he still heavy then might ask for an x ray.

As someone who runs animal weight clinics on a 37Kg dog 5 kgs up or down is often hard to notice until you start measuring neck, chest and hips then 5kgs could be as much as 5cm spread all the way down.
Other thought is was he cheating last time and leaning againist a wall many big dogs cheat on the scales - I move them away from the wall so they can't cheat.

No, he can't cheat. I know all about cheating on scales myself.
Scales in the surgery are well away from the walls.
The thing is, he was 42 kg before and he looked it, completely different from now.
I have mentioned it to friends who know him well, everybody says the scales must be wrong.
Which they are not.
Anyway, thanks all for your suggestions, will watch and see what happens.
