Advice needed on our old incontinent collie cross

Sorry I'm new to this page and don't know if this is a common question. We have a 14yr old dog and she's on medicine to help with her incontinence only it doesn't always work and she likes to go on the hall mat or our sons bedroom carpet which is causing my dh and I to argue! The reasons for this is that I'd like him to take responsibility for her accidents and help clean them up. Im struggling with the smell and have tried a few different products and ways of cleaning up after her. I know i do go on about it but purely because the smell gets to me and i want him to pull his weight with cleaning it up (the dog belonged to him for several years befoe they both joined me and my ds). He says he's read up on the matter and dogs lose their dignity once they lose their bladder control and perhaps it's time to put her down. I'm really upset by this suggestion and can't believe he'd even suggest it. Wwyd?!!

If the dog still has a good quality of life except for the wee issue - ie enjoys going out, eating, no pain, happy to see you and get a fuss, it seems a bit premature to be looking at her being PTS.

The fact that DH doesn't want to clean it and is suggesting PTS - well that is one for the relationships topic

He must help clean up. She is a joint responsibility. If he thinks he is too good to clean up piss but you aren't, he needs a knee to the bollocks reality check. Get a washable mat for the hall, keep the dog out of the bedrooms, to minimise the smell problem.

At first I thought he was being sarcastic but then he said he'd been reading up on older dogs losing dignity blah blah and I realised he was serious. I wanted to come on here to ask other dog owners their thoughts so thanks dstw

It is true that dogs hate to be dirty. My first trip would be back to the vets, there is more than one type of medicine that can help the dog, so go back tell the vet the problem and then see what he suggests.

Re cleaning, Keep the dog in one area when you can not totally supervise, you can get specialist cleaner from most good pets shops that will totally eliminate the smell. So smell should not be a problem.
