My lovely old girl has gone ...

We had our much loved 14 yr old Lab PTS this afternoon. She had gone downhill since Christmas and yesterday morning it was a matter of when. My heart is broken, I don't think I have cried so much in years, it's like losing a member of the family. Older two DCs have cried all evening since vet came out and have finally gone to bed with very red eyes. Although it was, without doubt, the right decision to make, it was the hardest phone call I have ever made and sitting beside her with her head on my knee as she went was just heartbreaking. I'm trying to imagine her running around in doggy heaven - no more arthritis, no pain, youthful and back with a couple of old friends. It's tough, isn't it? Sad

I'm so sorry. It isn't like losing a member of your family, you actually have lost a member of your family. Give yourself permission to grieve for your dear old friend. Take care.

LeBOF · 16/02/2012 22:23

I'm so sorry- I know that's it's heartbreaking.

usualsuspect · 16/02/2012 22:24

Its heartbreaking , but she was lucky to have a loving home and a happy life

take care Sad

Latsia · 16/02/2012 22:26

I'm sorry to hear. It's so hard. A wise MNetter recently called it our final act of love and I thought that was spot on.

SP0104 · 16/02/2012 22:27

Big hugs to you and your DC's.
Wow, 14!, thats a long and happy life with a caring family, a pet couldn't ask for more.

Bossybritches22 · 16/02/2012 22:33

Nothing to add to the others wise words, I'm a great lab fan and have lost 2 over the years, they get into your life and your heart don't they.

A dog has no use for fancy cars or big homes or designer clothes. Status symbol means nothing to him. A waterlogged stick will do just fine. A dog judges others not by their colour or creed or class but by who they are inside. A dog doesn't care if you are rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull. Give him your heart and he will give you his

my favourite quote we sent in messages to all our old boys fans.

I'm sorry- one of the most horrible decisions to have to make.

She had lots of love from your family.

MrsDeeBee · 16/02/2012 22:40

I'm so sorry too.

Thank you everyone. I've stopped crying now but know the tears will come again when DH gets home from business trip. My sister called earlier and at the end of the call said 'what about the dog?'. I told her I couldn't talk about it now, so she said okay, don't eat me and put the phone down as I started to tell her what a stressful day it has been. Charming, eh?

I'm so sorry you've lost your boy :( But how lucky he was to have such a loving family to the end x

PandaWatch · 17/02/2012 16:35

I'm so so sorry for you and your family. And your sister's reaction was completely out of line (people who have never been fortunate enough to have a wonderful dog as a member of their family seldom understand the grief caused by their loss). Give yourself time to grieve. It's a horrible thing to go through but try your best to remember all the great times you had together. Our dogs live in our hearts forever. My family and I still retell touching and funny stories about the dogs we lost 17 and 9 years ago. Just like any loved one, they are never forgotten.

RedwingWinter · 17/02/2012 16:45

I'm so sorry to hear this.

dubaipieeye · 17/02/2012 16:51

I'm so sorry. We lost our lab when I was 18 and the rest of my family were on holiday, so I had to make the decision to have her PTS. It was awful, horredous but now I look back and think it was the only good best thing I did as a teenager. You are brave and loving and in time you will remember with a smile. Much love. x

JasperJohns · 17/02/2012 21:32

I am so sorry for you.

We had our gorgeous old girl (also 14) PTS in August.

Even though it was absolutely time (probably a bit beyond) it was so sad.

There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of her. She will always be our first and best dog.

chobbler · 17/02/2012 21:43

I'm one more star in the sky tonight,
you can see me there
I am shining bright,

I am over you
so you can see,
you are never alone
you will always have me.

Millie1 · 17/02/2012 23:30

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I remember when we lost dogs when I was a child and my Mum cried for days - I understand why now. We were away today which was a good distraction but I was in tears driving home - if she was outside when I drove off, she was always, always sitting waiting for me to come home. No longer. Sad. But oh we were lucky to have had such a wonderful girl for all those years.

Sorry, should have said that I'm sorry you had such a big decision to make at a tender age Dubai and so sorry about your girl Jasper. The house feels empty without them, doesn't it.
