Anyone got any experience of the lemon spray thing that stops dogs barking?

My friend has got one for her dog. I was just wanting to know what they were like. Her dog barks and gets a lemon spray under his nose and it stops him barking apparently.....here

I have all of these contraptions!
I have one that squirts automatically when the dog barks and one that will only squirt when I press a button. I haven't used mine for ages. The batteries are flat now.
I got mine to stop my dog chasing but it didn't work. He just chased everything through a mist of citronella spray Grin. I no longer have him so haven't used them for ages.
I have thought of buying a new battery for mine to try it on my collie. She only barks when i do agility with my other dog but she is very loud and annoying, and can't keep stopping and going back to her, I think something remote might work (other dogs barking set the automatic one off!)

Not really sure how effective it will be for your friends dog. They soon learn that they can bark without the collar on and some of them don't take any notice if they are really wound up.
The most effective thing I have seen them used for is to stop dogs eating anything and everything they come across. They seem quite effective in these situations. I wouldn't use them on a nervous dog that would just make things worse.

My friend tried one, but all that happened was that her dog learned to bark and bark through the spray until it ran out. And take it from me, this was NOT a bright dog.

I got one for my terrier when he started barking through the night, he wore it for a couple of weeks and now only barks at night if there is a problem, it worked brilliantly.

Given dogs have a sense of smell thousands of times more sensitive than ours, I've never understood why people would use these. The deterrent should coincide with the unwanted behaviour, not linger for hours afterwards!

Horrible horrible things that do not work at all in changing a behaviour. If you have a multi dog household the collar goes off when any dog barks, the smell lingers longer than the act that the dog is being punished for. If you have £40 to waste send it to charity [smile}

whoops Smile

bear in mind you can get water spray rather than the lemon spray and that is what we used.
