next step is teaching him to shut it after himself.

am pointing to the door, saying 'door' and he paws it shut. then gets a treat.

hoping this will work!

My Neighbour watched my dog ring the doorbell to be let in this afternoon and commented on what a clever dog I had.

I told him she wasn't a clever dog, it's the second time this week she has forgotten her key. Wink

Wish I could teach mine to shut the door. I leave the backdoor pulled to but not firmly closed when he's out so he can heatbutt his way back in - just can't see him getting the idea of pushing it shut afterwards. Let us know if you succeed!

he can actually open it with the handle. so am hoping pushing it shut will be easy to actually opening the door.

Little tip if you don't want him opening the doors - take out the door handle mechanism and replace it upside-down so you have to lift the handle instead of pushing it down - works a treat and stopped us getting woken up at rediculous times of the night by 3 dogs trying to get under the duvet! One of our boys can actually open the front door using the tiny yale handle! Didn't realise this until we came home one day to find the front door open and 3 pooches having the time of their lives in the front garden! Something you could try to get him to shut the door after himself is to hang a treat or a toy high up on the door so he has to jump up at the door to get it - pushing against the door in the process.

My male boxer takes a running head butt at the back door to come back in (he expects it to left open in all weathers) - hits so hard it swings right open, bangs on the wall behind and swings back shut !! Only problem is door has landed on DH a couple of times when he is at the cooker, luckily he takes it in good humour- 'come in why dont you'.
Female boxers sometimes runs in so quick she manages to bypass the kitchen and go straight from the back door to the dining room!
