Poorly pup. When to go to vets?

8 month old springer threw up all his breakfast this morning and has been listless ever since. We've been for a short walk that did get his tail wagging a bit, but he just wants to sleep now. I guess they just get ill sometimes? I've made him some rice which I'll offer now. Do I just keep an eye on him and let him sleep it off? What deterioration should I look for? Thanks (worse than PFB).

I think I'd take him now, not based on the upchucking but based on his general listlessness. Jasper is occassionally sick, usually when he's scavenged something he shouldn't have or drunk out of puddles, but he's never been 'ill' iyswim. Does your pooch eat things he shouldn't?

I'd say don't offer him anything and see how he is after lunch.

Is he drinking more than usual or drooling? Stretching out with his bum in the air? Watch out for those signs. And he's only been sick once so far?

I am not a great one for rushing to the vet to be charged thirty odd quid to be told to starve my dog for 24 hours and see how she is. I'd leave fresh water down and keep a close eye. I wouldn't offer food until late this afternoon.

I'll keep him with me and ring the vet for an app this pm. He's always drinking out of muddy puddles and tries to eat crap (literally).

Could just be the muddy puddles/crap eating then Grin Jasper managed to snaffle part of a kebab yesterday on our walk Hmm Now THAT was unpleasant poop to scoop

Didn't take him to vets yesterday. Fed him rice in the afternoon. He remained quiet (oh God, so easy!!) all afternoon and evening, sleeping next to me most of the day and ignoring the cat. Waggy and ravenous this morning and has been chewing his toys which he didn't want to do yesterday. He's had rice again and a small amount of kibble. Think he's recovered but will keep him with me all day.

Glad he is better today. Smile

Sounds good to me - much better. Keep an eye out for the symptoms above, and if he's sick over the next few days then I would visit the vet.

belindarose · 25/01/2012 08:53

Oh dear, he's gone downhill again. I've got a vets app in an hour. Very lethargic (except on off lead walks when he's been deceptively fine!). Up 5 times last night to go out with diarrhoea (whined in his crate each time which he never does). Hope it's nothing bad.

How did you get on?

They are so deceptive on walks. They can be literally at death's door (as one of mine was this summer) and still look and behave as though they're completely well on a walk.

It now sounds as though it's a bug of some sort. Has he been sick again? And is he eating normally? What did the vet say?

belindarose · 25/01/2012 13:23

Vet couldn't find anything particularly wrong, except that he's underweight which we knew. Agreed he was very much under the weather though. Has given antibiotics in case it's a bug, kaolin and some eye drops for gunky eyes. He was sick again Saturday night. Vet said to keep him on his normal food but in lots of tiny meals throughout the day. Got to go back in a few days to consider 'investigations' if no better.

Oh no, I'm just nosying on here for advice, my dog seems to be similar to yours at the moment, all his life (hes 12 now) he's had a couple of days where he goes off his food and is sick, we usually switch him to rice and then 48 hours later he perks up, however he's been on and off for about a week now, perks up fine, and then next day down again, but he's lost weight and just not happy. Making the appointment tomorrow to see what's up!
