I need a coat for my spaniel

But I can't work out what the measurements mean. Where do I measure from and to? And any recommendations?

Why does your spaniel need a coat - is there a problem with the one he/she came with?!

Collar to tail. But unless he is in the rain for 2+ hours, he should be ok without a coat.

Because in this weather he gets absolutely disgustingly filthy, and it then takes time to clean him/the house/me up after every walk. I was thinking mud damage control. So something lightweight that covers his body (because he so loves to roll/scratch crap all over himself) might help.

And his Amazon flying jacket just doesn't cut it.

It isn't that difficult to clean him up though surely - a wash down with a hose pipe is fine, failing that a good rub with a dry towel will be enough. My 2 dogs get a hose pipe wash every day if they come back mucky (unless the pipe is frozen!), a vigorous dry down and then a kip in their warm utility room until they're dry when they're allowed in to the kitchen. Keep him confined to a smaller area until he's dry and it'll reduce the mud. They roll and scratch as part of their grooming, and by sticking a coat on you're removing the chance for him to do what comes naturally. I agree a wet mucky dog is a pain, but I wouldn't put a coat on mine for my convenience I'm afraid.

I have an open plan house and no outside tap. So yep, I'm looking at my convenience here. And also the resale value of my house. In dry weather, it's fine. The dirt hoovers up/can be brushed out. Thick swamp mud...not so much.
