Scabby dog

Sorry to start such a disgusting thread. My 5 year old Lhasa Apso has developed some kind of skin condition. It's mostly around his lower back tail area but he does have some patches on his chest top of his head and ears. They are like thick crusty scabs that flake off and leave red patches. Pretty disgusting really. He hasn't got fleas or anything like that.

Has anyone had a dog with similar? He doesn't find them uncomfortable as i'm sure he'd be scratching if he did and you don't really notice they are there until you stroke him and you can feel them because his fur covers them.

I'm going to take him to the vet but just wondered if anyone else had a dog with similar.

He also smells pretty disgusting too at the minute even though I bath him often.

Sounds like mange - the scabs most usually appear on the ear margins, head, chest and elbows. Treatment is pretty simple, some of the spot-ons (I think Advocate) will clear it up but definitely requires a vet visit.

Another alternative is an allergy - food, enviromental or otherwise.

Forgot to specify - sarcoptic mange. Sounds like we have demodectic on the other thread, any more for mange bingo? Grin

Just thought I'd update in case of any other scabby dog owners out there Hmm

The vet thinks it's a bacterial dermatitis yeasty type infection (hence his terrible smell) and has given him two weeks of antibiotics and some shampoo. Got to bath him twice a week for a month Confused.

my rottweiler had the same problem. took to the vets they shaved her and gave her antibiotics and steroids. yet it still came back that same year! so tried thios tea tree lotion for skin conditions (you can get it in pet stores) rubbed it in twice a day and it worked! my akita also has had skin problems but the akita breed is known to have skin conditions. so it could just be the breed and it can also be related to stress, so make sure your dogs being exercised daily is all id say!x
