Hi everyone, the breeder from whom I bought my 9 week old GSP was feeding the puppies Purina Beta puppy food. We have continued with it so far but I am now wondering if this is a good or a bad idea. Any views? Thanks x

Hi, our pup came on Purina Beta. I wasn't pleased at all- he was very gassy, pooing loads and had runny eyes. It's main ingredient is Cereals IIRC, then only 14% meat in the form of 'animal deratives' So loads of mashed up crap, basically. I switched over to RAW/BARF diet, easily done once you've looked into it, (lots if threads about it). Made a massive difference, coat is lovely and shiny, poo nice and solid, great White teeth, and isn't hyper. Still got lots of energy though and my trainer says he looks very 'sparky!'

Other complete food that might be worth a look are Fish4Dogs, Burns/Skinners and Orijen. Applaws I've also heard good things about.

You might need to experiment a bit to see what works for you.

HTH

Thanks inthepotty. I haven't read any of the RAW/BARF threads yet because my guess it will be too much work for me. However, I will read them now just in case it's do-able.

I wasnt able to do the raw/barf but i fed arden grange which was a very good food. It not too expensive if you get it from petplanet

I used NatureDiet for my puppy and continue to do so, she is in great shape with a lovely coat.

'Nature Diet' is the brand I use- very high quality and economical.

Beta have a bit of a deal going on with breeders. They give them puppy packs and so encourage new owners to use their food. Give your puppy time to settle in so don't change his food for a while and then move onto something you feel happier with. Beta is not the worst but not great either!

symply puppy food - or symply large breed puppy food. the breeder I got my latest puppy from was using this so I just carried on - and was really impressed.
Great glossy coat, really healthy, lovelyl teeth and breath and really easy to pickup after her - also changed my 11 year old lab onto the senior light variety - I though she was stinky because she was old but in fact it turns out it was because I was feeding her rubbish dog food (with out knowig - love her almost as much as the dcs)- I CANNOT believe the difference in her. Am thinking of trying it on dh too :) would solve a lot of problems!

whoops sorry for typos!

shoutymcshoutsmum · 07/01/2012 21:35

Thanks everyone. Minimuu, what do you recommend using instead?

The Nature Diet food is quite appetising-looking actually...if we were in a zombie situation, I think I could bring myself to eat it Grin
