Starting to think about adding another dog ,love my cocker and will probably get another Grin but very taken with a scottie dog .Have heard very mixed reports but like the idea that they don't bark much, children are older (youngest 10) and used to dogs /animals

Scotties had a reputation for being bad-tempered and snappy, which is why there aren't many about now. I don't know if they're still the same but wouldn't risk it with kids. Westies (similar but white) are much nicer little dogs.

We have a 3 yo Westie who is absolutely the most lovely, gentle, well-mannered dog with humans big and small and are are on a waiting list for a Scottie in the early Spring so I'm eager to hear experiences too! We know a few Scotties in the neighbourhood who are absolutely charming (and very calm as adults). Our breeder has four young children so the puppies get lots of experience with small people before they go to their new homes.

Have to say we have known several grumpy Westies so I do think it's down to breeder and environment as well as the dogs personality. Can I ask how you found your breeder popbiscuit?

FIL's Scottie has a grumpy temperament. She growls all the time when anyone visits.

We asked several Scottie owners where they got their dogs from and this one came highly recommended several times. All the dogs we've met from this breeder have been exemplary in both health and temperament, are CKC registered and the breeder does genetic testing for Von Willebrand Disease (or vWD) which is one of the more common health issues to affect Scotties (they are also prone to Scottie cramp and skin issues which are things you might want to ask about). We have checked references etc. as well and met with the breeder and her family. I live in Canada so some of this info. won't be of much help to you but it would probably be a good idea to go through the UK Kennel Club to find a reputable breeder and to ask people you meet on the street with Scotties about their experiences.

The Scottie next door is lovely - hardly ever barks, and rolls onto her back for tickles whenever she sees my kids. She did go a bit mental when she spotted the rabbit in his run, though.

My friend has a Westie which is vile - snaps and growls at everyone.

I have a Westie (my second) would never have any other breed. Pennywise is my baby.
