Can you feed a dog roast pork sraps?
He'll have mixer as well

Mine will be getting some later.

Svrider · 01/01/2012 17:36

Marvellous. Thanks
Dh has always thought no, but I've just been asking why not, after all sausages are generally considered ok.

You can't give him cooked pork bones though, (I think) because they splinter. But the meat is fine.

whojamaflip · 01/01/2012 17:48

We don't cos it gives our guys the runs........not pretty Smile

OldLadyKnowsSantaClaus · 01/01/2012 18:02

Ah, my dog has a cast-iron stomach. Is it because it's fatty?

whojamaflip · 01/01/2012 18:16

no idea but I do know that there was a row at the local hunt kennels open day when the hounds were given some of the pig roast by one of the visitors - interesting day........

Any other type of meat suits our guys fine - mind you I can sympathise cos I can't eat pork either - gives me a really gippy tummy - I have heard that its the structure of the meat or a protein in it or something < puts boffin hat on >

Svrider · 01/01/2012 18:23

Oooo errr. He does have a tendancy towards the runs, if given anything unusual. He has dog food n mixer all week, then roast chicken, turkey, lamb or beef on Sunday (scraps) with mixer.
We've had pork today and he was looking hopefully at the plates!
Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll not risk it, and let him have a nice bit of chicken tomorrow (no bones)

Well, I did a little googling and yes, seems many dogs do get the runs if they eat pork. You learn something new every day! :)

My mum always said not to give dogs pork - not sure where she got it from. And indeed, our elder dog once stole a packet of pork hotdogs, ate the lot, and was very, very ill afterwards - a serious vet case, we were worried he wasn't going to survive it.

Since then I've kept him well away from pork. But recently I've read lots that says it's OK. The vet sent a leaflet before Christmas of foods bad for/ poisonous for dogs, and pork wasn't on it.

So we've recently tried giving small quantities to our younger dog, and she seems to tolerate it (mind you, she tolerates dead mice, birds, water voles, pheasants, rotting deer legs Grin ).

I will never give it to our elder dog again, though.

Choufleur · 02/01/2012 19:58

We never give our springer pork as it really upsets his stomach - although he's ok having pigs ears and trotters.

Thanks everyoneSmile

I was always told that you don't get pork dog food because pig tastes too much like person, and if dogs take to the flavour they are likely to bite their owners. Probably nonsense, but great tales to tell small children.

So who ate the human meat for the comparison?

OP posts:
OldLadyKnowsNothing · 04/01/2012 03:08

Many humans have eaten human meat over the centuries, sometimes as a religious rite (consuming your dead family members kept them with you), sometimes as an act of war (consuming your dead enemy as the ultimate victory or a way to recognise his fighting prowess and keep some of it for yourself) or out of necessity in times of starvation. There was a case where the survivors of a shipwreck drew lots. A cabin boy was consumed, and the others faced trial when they were rescued; think they were acquitted but can't rightly recall.

So, if any of those also had access to pigmeat, the comparison would have been made.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 04/01/2012 03:15

I've always wondered vaguely if that's why bacon is so attractive! Grin
