We'd had no problems with daily brushing of pup (7.5 mo springer) until today. I literally can't get near him with the brush. He wouldn't obey any commands that he's normally fine with (sit, wait etc) and I couldn't even reward the tiniest brush contact with a click and treat as he just went for the brush every time.

Help! Some kind of desensitisation needed. He gets very muddy on a daily basis, so brushing is a must! He had a quick check at the vets this morning as it was ten days post castration and nothing wrong, although the brushing incident didn't happen till this evening so didn't check specifically for any cause. Just noticed him scratching and flea treatment due in a few days do I might do that now.

That sounds odd to me, given he has always been ok with the brush before. Has been been on lead only exercise for a while post his op? If so he might be a bit frustrated and pent up. Is he reacting badly to anything else? I think there must be a bit more to it tbh.

Yes, I'm a bit worried too. I'll try today after a play when he's calmer maybe, and use cheese. Saying that though, I've only this week started using cheese (tiny bits) as a treat as his recall was flagging. Maybe his skin is reacting to the dairy?
