My Goldie,Millie, has what looks like a skin mite of some sorts. She has flea treatments every 3 months was not due the next until January but was scratching a lot last week so I upped the grooming & treated her on Friday.

Yesterday was the first chance I got to really inspect her scalp she has little black crawly things in her fur, & speckles of what looks like black dust on her scalp particularly over the base of her spine where she has been chewing her coat particularly.

It's most peculiar as if there are fleas around usually I'm the one who gets bitten, they like me & if it was plain old fleas, the Frontline should have helped shouldn't it? Quite happy to re-treat if needed.

Going to try & get in the vets tomorrow but wanted to ask for advice here, any thoughts oh wise ones?

Fleas are a shiny brown, and really jump. I don't know what the black crawly things are but they aren't fleas.

I use advocate on my dogs, as it treats a whole range of nasties, not just fleas.

oh bugger -only used Frontline as that's what we used to get from the vet so carried on buying that online. Every 4 weeks? Blimey is it expensive?

Maybe advocate is what I need then as these little critters are def not brown & scuttle rather than jump, very odd.

She has less today than yesterday but the black stuff is still on her scalp, but I'm brushing her almost bald!

The black stuff is likely to be a mix of tiny spots of blood and crawly critter faeces. I know, bleurghhh. Your vet will know instantly, so take her in, and tell them she's crawling with something just in case they'd rather not have her in the waiting room.

Advocate is a 3 monthly one. I switched to it as my dogs were picking up fox mange occasionally.

Thanks scrappy I will. Poor love is obviously irritated by it, although I think she is scratching less than before I frontlined her.....Hmm

Ah well I'll keep up with the brushing & get her to the vets tomorrow, really difficult with her thick coat to see the skin to assess the extent of the infestation.

She's loving all the extra brushing though Xmas Grin

different flea treatments work well in different areas. You need to take advice from your vet which is effective in your area.
Also sounds like mites.
