grit salt?

I remeber reading that the grit put down in snow is dangerous to dogs as they lick it off thier feet, and get dehydrated, is this true and if so how do I safeguard against do I need to wash my dogs feet after walks?

I've just walked my dogs along a road that had been salted, and was worried about the same thing, so we came home via the stream to wash their feet.

Gawd, this hadn't even entered my head of things to worry about
