Our 7 month old was castrated this morning. He hasn't eaten or drunk anything now since 8pm last night and he is lying in his bed whimpering so seems to be in pain. What should we do?

Ring the out of hours vet for advice, definitely.

Yes, ring OOH vets - it could be as simple as he just needs more pain killers but better to be on the safe side.

Let us know how he gets on.

Just called them and they said he is more likely to be whimpering because he feels horrible from the anaesthetic. There are two painkillers which will still be in his system, apparently, and so the vet wouldn't be able to 'top up' until tomorrow.

She said some dogs recover faster than others and it isn't that unusual that he still doesn't want to eat, drink or get up. She expects he will be much better in the morning and we should phone if he isn't.

I feel reassured - thank you for giving me the push to call!

Eating, drinking, weeing and pooing today :)

Still whimpering and very restless but a definite improvement.

Smile yay, my bitch was in a right state after op, but soon recovered, she did need top ups though, the vet virtually called her a wuss which I think was a bit harsh.

How is he now? Mine was done a week ago and did take a few days to get back to his normal self. He had 3 days of painkillers and they made him sleepy I think. He particularly objected to the head collar but we were able to stop using it after a day as he didn't bother his wound.

ah, pleased it was nothing serious - sounds like he is a bit 'sensitive' I prescribe lots of cuddles!
