Can you recommend any books about dogs (non-fiction or fiction) that are realistic? (about the dogs)

Marley And Me?

Yes, I've read that one - it's good.

A Dog Year by John Katz is good (movie coming soon). Martin Clunes has also written a few non-fiction books (and I think there's a TV series?). James Herriot, obviously, and there's a good novel I read recently called "The Art of Racing in the Rain" from the POV of a terrier-X.

Depends on your definition of 'realistic', but I, Jack is exactly how I would expect a labrador to speak/think. I think I enjoyed it almost as much as the DCs did.

Thanks for those. I've read one by Martin Clunes (good), didn't know he had others.

Lasy dog on the hill - excellent, can't remember the author!

Exexpat, I don't mind fiction as long as it's accurate, iykwim.

What about "Born to Run" by Michael Morpurgo? Good for older children.

Personally, I loved the dog in The Unbearable Lightness of Being and cried buckets when he died (big softy that i am).

The Hundred Mile an Hour Dog series by Jeremy Strong - they are laugh out loud funny, great for children, but actually are hilarious if you (as we do) own a particularly naughty greyhound.
