Is this normal? Dog and puppy mating and pooing on eachother.

Our 7 month JRT puppy is in her first season, bleeding stopped 2 days ago. Our 5year old larger terrier male is neutered and has never had female doggy company before.

They have been paying a bit more attention to each other since she came into season but nothing outrageous, just sniffing. We noticed her trying to jump onto him earlier and we've just found them in a most compromising position.

Arse to arse, tails poker straight in the air, assuming they were mating because when we tried to tug them apart they were obviously 'connected'. She was also pooing all over him, nice! They both looked surprised and they ran away from each other within 2 minutes of us seeing (they were only alone for 10 max!) We've kept them apart but she is now howling and whining at the door for him and he is hiding under the bed.

Is this normal? Boy was snipped 4.5 years ago so are we completely safe from unwanted pups?

It isn't exactly normal, but not unheard of either.

The snip doesn't remove the urge from all dogs and the urge will lead the physical reaction of an erection and tie to take place if it's strong enough.

If you're quite sure he was snipped so long ago, there's no chance of puppies.

I'd keep a very close eye on the bitch - she's had a bit of a rude awakening. And she sounds as though she's halfway through her season and at the most tantalising.

It is stressful for a neutered dog to have an in season bitch around, especially as your dog still has the necessary urges. To be kind to them both you might like to consider keeping them apart for another couple of weeks.
