Welcome to the pointies thread fivehours, I hope you find it helpful should you need any help or advice!

lost where are you in the country? I shall be there this weekend to steal away your adorable new puppy :o

Seriously though. He is gorgeous! I love that photo of him with the bowl :o bless him!

SpaghettiTwirlerPrancerVixen · 29/12/2011 21:29

I'm glad I thought of starting a pointy thread, it's turned out to be pretty useful to new pointy owners :)

By the way, does dry dog food go off after a while when it's been opened?

FiveHoursSleep · 29/12/2011 21:43

Lost, oh bless, he could FIT in that bowl :)
Have up loaded a couple of photos with my pointy one and a a couple of non-pointies in.

lostinwales · 29/12/2011 21:50

Five your pointy is gorgeous just look at that fantastic tail, goodness everyone's dogs look huge now compared to mine! I miscalculated on the bowls, they were on sale on the site I bought his crate but they are rather a lot larger than I thought, the bowl in the picture is the small one Blush. Well I'm a proud mummy this evening, he went into his crate of his own accord for a nap and then when he woke up went straight to the back door and went out for a poo. Is there a g&t thread for dogs... (oh boy I wasn't this PFB with my actual first born)

SpaghettiTwirlerPrancerVixen · 29/12/2011 22:07

Oh no lost you're not going all PFDog now are you? :o

five your dog is so elegant looking! That tail is fabulous too.

lostinwales · 29/12/2011 22:07

Okay, two more pictures up and that's it .

I have to say a big bit of loveliness for our breeder as well, I know now that going to a rescue is the best way to get a new dog and in future that is what I'll do, it was too late this time. BUT when I went today to collect Silver she had a new Dalmatian pup and boxer pup that she had got from rescue, the boxer was about to be put down as he was scarred and no one wanted him so I think that almost works in a way? They were her husbands present to her and vice versa, lovely people.

BehindLockNumberNine · 29/12/2011 22:26

Oh wow Lost, I am in love with your puppy.... And it has given me a very very good idea of what my Sammy would have looked like as a pupster...

Enjoy him, he will grow soooo quickly xx

lostinwales · 30/12/2011 08:39

Hmm, any hints as to what to do for a runny pointy tummy? I've kept his food the same as the breeder, I want to move to raw buuuut right now he has the classic runny bum I'm guessing from all the change (and eating leaves in the garden, idiot dog!) Are there any foods I could give him that are a little more binding as my granny would say or shall I just keep him on the usual until he has settled down?

FiveHoursSleep · 30/12/2011 09:38

Keep him on the usual. It'll be all the changes and excitement. If it's relaly bad and he's on 4 meals a day you could miss a meal, but it won't last more than a day or too.
What did the breeder feed him?

lostinwales · 30/12/2011 13:25

Very excited to announce that he did a huge non runny poo just now, wow I haven't been this obsessed with bowel movements since DS3 was a baby. He's on Lathams at the moment 26% 'Turkey meat meal' then 26% rice so not exactly meat rich, but I am happy for now as he is eating really well and pooing better. The breeder gave me a box of pedigree as well but I think I will donate it to the local shelter (and still feel a bit guilty doing that). I think I'll give him a week and then switch to raw. Anyway, he cried all night the little bugger, which I ignored until 5am when I caved as I was worried he was lying in a pool of poo or something, anyway, of course, he was fine, I am knackered and he is lying in his cage all wrapped up dreaming of chasing small boys round the garden Grin

Scuttlebutter · 30/12/2011 18:37

Ooh, Five, i want to kidnap your lovely blue pointy, I just love his tail. Xmas Grin

And when I've napped him, I'll nip down to Lost and snaffle her adorable little pup - swoon. He is utterly gorgeous.

The equivalent of a G & T thread, is to take him (and assorted DC) to a local charity dog show in the summer and put him in a few classes like Sausage Eating Race, best behaved puppy, most beautiful eyes, Best Child Handler etc... You invariably come home with a gorgeous rosette, and you get an insanely ridicolous sense of pride in your now officially award winning pointy. Grin It's also very nice to see DC who you are fond of in the ring (DN in our case) and has been known for me to have unaccountable "grit in the eye" at sight of small proud boy, enormous happy grund and equally enormous rosette. Blush

The obsession with bowel movements gets worse, in fact it will now be permanent fixture of family conversation... Xmas Grin

KateBeckett · 30/12/2011 21:29

Hello! I've just been pointed (ha!) in the direction of this thread as I am waiting to get a pointy hound of my very own! Need to do some proper research and wait until dp and I have moved IMO a house as we're currently In a flat, but I am very excited, especially reading all about your whippy dogs and greys and looking at the pics! Not sure I can wait til June!

FiveHoursSleep · 30/12/2011 22:12

ScuttleB, Our pointy is a girl and anytime you want her come on by. She's in disgrace tonight after trekking half the garden over my clean sheets.
We have done the charity shows and she won best pup in show with my eldest Daughter. The rosette was def oversized.

Scuttlebutter · 30/12/2011 22:25

Apols, she is gorgeous.

Yes, they have such enormous feet. And the nails are long too so perfect for picking up clumps of mud and oomska from the garden and depositing on a nice clean surface (such as a bed Grin)! It's at this time of year I seriously consider getting a steam mop - anyone with any experience of them, positive or negative?

We not only have the mud issue but one of ours could win the Messy Feeder of the Year Award and loves to throw his food enthusiastically around the kitchen. He also makes a strange pilgrimage with a small portion to the rug in the living room - we are wondering if this is some strange grund religious ceremony - appeasing the God of the Sheepskin or something.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 31/12/2011 20:31

GAAAAH! Sodding NYE fireworks!

We are in tonight (the kids, the dog, the guinea pigs and I - DH is working.) DH took DS1 to his mate's earlier for a little party. I stayed home with DS2.

Some fireworks went off while I was putting DS2 to bed.

Our 40 kilo hound, who can't yet do our stairs, panicked and bolted upstairs. We have a stairgate fitted but I don't usually use it as he's never done the stairs before or even shown the remotest interest. I heard a bit of a kerfuffle; I just thought it was him rearranging his favourite sheepskin so finished the story, had a cuddle with DS2 and came down from the attic to see very large, very shaky, very scared big black greyhound on the landing pounding up to me to shove his head under my arm.

I couldn't get him back downstairs.

We sat together until DH and DS1 came home. He still wouldn't come down. I waved yogurt, fresh roast lamb, sardines, peanut butter, everything in front of him but no joy. DH and I carried him downstairs in the end, which ended badly as I missed several steps at the bottom and have somehow hurt my leg. Hound was fine. Except for the terror of the fireworks of course, in the face of which my dicky leg is a minor detail, poor love.

He's settled down now. We've done our best to keep it ordinary, calm etc but he's so upset. And it's only going to get worse at midnight. DH is working all night so I think I'll sleep downstairs with the dog. We have masses of family coming tomorrow too. Luckily they're pretty doggy so they'll probably ignore him.

Poor chap, he's such a gentle giant. I am DEFINITELY going to try and get some tranquillisers from the vet for fireworks night. Sorry, rant's over now. Happy 2012!

MissBetsyTrotwood · 31/12/2011 20:33

I said attic in my previous post. I mean loft. It's converted and everything - I don't just pull down the ladder and shove the DSs up there in an old box to go to bed. Xmas Grin

batsintheroof · 31/12/2011 23:07

The big boys are always the biggest wimps aren't they! I have to stay up tonight until fireworks finish. May end up sleeping downstairs with doggy. Oh well.

Scuttlebutter · 01/01/2012 00:41

Another one here who's up with the dogs. We have the whole sprectrum from one who is just mildly annoyed at being woken up and gives us the sarcastic eyebrow, to a very frightened girl with a big lump in the middle who gets cross and runs around barking, then can be easily distracted with a biscuit and a cuddle. Our darling girl takes medication tonight - I absolutely bloody hate fireworks. I totally get people wanting to have a party and even let off a few but why do they have to be so LOUD? Grrr. Harrumph. Fortunately things are now calming down and off to bed soon. Got a lovely walk tomorrow with our local RGT branch on Barry beach. Any pointy owners in the area welcome at around 1 with tea and coffee afterwards if you like. Or bring a hip flask!

Scuttlebutter · 01/01/2012 00:43

Betsy, I Xmas Smile at your post, and tempting your grund with all those lovely things...

Hope your leg is better in the morning.

lostinwales · 01/01/2012 10:33

Well we had a party last night, had it all planned to take whippety baby up to our bedroom to be guarded by DS2 (who has quickly become the true love of our boy and the feeling is mutual) but he sat in his bed with his nose poking out watching all the grown ups wearing wigs and singing karaoke like it happened every day! Can't believe how quickly he has become the heart and soul of our family, he is fabulous and I can't imagine how we were ever without him.

Happy pointy new year everyone x

KateBeckett · 01/01/2012 13:04

This is the year I get my hound!!

SpaghettiTwirlerPrancerVixen · 01/01/2012 13:15

Me too kate, HOORAY! Even though I've already had one for about half an hour. . . .

SpaghettiTwirlerPrancerVixen · 01/01/2012 13:23

betsy how is your leg today? Hope billy is ok too (it is billy isn't it?)! My mum got a baby boa constrictor for christmas and she's named him billy :o
By the way is he still peeing when you're bathing the DCs?

What a good boy he was lost! Bless him :) I bet he was sat there wondering what the hell you were all playing at :o

SpaghettiTwirlerPrancerVixen · 01/01/2012 18:03

God DP is such a knob Angry. LGT rang to say Sox passed his child test only for DP to decide he looks like someones puked up a korma all over him and says he doesn't want him because he doesn't like his colour. I had to ring them back and tell them he doesn't like him. DP is now saying he'd rather have a girl than a brindle boy. So going to ring them tomorrow to arrange to meet one of their girls that would be suitable.

GAH!

MissBetsyTrotwood · 01/01/2012 19:35

Aww, thanks guys. According to my osteopath neighbour I've torn some muscles and it's quite painful but will mend with rest like that's going to happen. Xmas Grin I don't know what tearing a muscle means exactly but I can't put much of my considerable weight on it. The hound is not getting upstairs again for a long time!

Yes, Spaghetti he is Billy. He's not peeing at bath time anymore - I think he knows our routine now and knows I'll be back downstairs soon. Billy the boa constrictor - what a hoot! I know you don't need persuading but we know a lovely 14yo brindle boy and he's gorgeous looking. He has a beautiful coat that hasn't really shown the grey and is as nimble as he was ten years ago! When all the local tinies see our Bill they say 'Mummy, horsey' when they see Eddy they say 'Mummy, tiger!' And that coat won't show up the dandruff so much either.

Our chap was great with our guests today but as my DB was being a little PFB about his 4 wk old DS Billy wasn't allowed in the room with him. I know it's DB's prerogative and all but Bill wasn't remotely interested in him (except during nappy changing of course - interesting smells and all) and was miserable about being baby gated in the kitchen. DH went and sat with him in the end and fell asleep in his bed with him next to the radiator. He had got in from work at 5.30 this morning so I guess warm cuddly dog + wine + large meal =ed snooze!
