Share stories, advice and ask for help if you need it! There are a few resident hound experts (myself not included) in the doghouse, so, feel free to share! :)

Well we test-walked robbie yesterday, he was an absolute angel! Didn't bat an eyelid at the pram at all and he kept his paws out the way of the wheels! Just need to pin DP down for a day we can get him! Going to ring up tomorrow to confirm we definately do want him and also to ask what food he's on so I can get some in.

lostinwales, a big warm pointy welcome!

Yes, lurchers are pointys, greys, whippets, lurchers, salukis, afghans, are all of the pointy variety. And there are more, can't remember off the top of my head though.

Oh, please can you teach my whippetty to keep him paws out of the way of wheels? He constantly gets tangled with ds2's trike wheels and always looks most offended at this.

Yesterday in the park, we saw a gorgeous whippet/spaniel cross puppy. Soooo, absolutely gorgeous, though whippetty was very gentle, but a little bemused by this small, enthusiastic doggy.

lostinwales · 28/11/2011 22:39

Thank you SpaghettiTwirler! Very excited to be joining a new community, I really didn't think this much about having children so I can't wait to start being part of the dog owners gang. Never been so enamoured of any dog (had Schnauzers and Westies growing up) as I have the pointy types Grin I'm envisioning me surrounded by different sizes after the boys have all left home.

NotMostPeople · 28/11/2011 22:40

I've ordered my boy a coat on eBay that looks rather promising, you can choose the colour of the exterior and from a variety of linings was about £13. I don't think he needs it yet, but I know the horrible cold is coming soon.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 28/11/2011 22:43

Link away, NotMostPeople.

I ordered one from the RGT, (feeling good, doing my bit etc) A MONTH AGO! Still not here. If it doesn't arrive tomorrow I'm just going to buy another. I feel bad about asking for money back from a charity.

OldMotherDismass · 28/11/2011 22:51

I must also admit, I never saw the point of owning more than one dog, but having had whippetty for 9 months now, the appeal of a second pointy is starting to grow Grin. It's like they say "pointys are like potato chips, one is never enough". I've seen a particularly lovely grey girl I'd be tempted by - suitable for children of all ages. I think only a very gentle nudge would convince dp.

I ordered towards the end of last week, so will report back when it arrives.

NotMostPeople · 28/11/2011 23:00

Oh yes, ours is only seven months old, but I'm already planning on getting him a friend in a year or so. He really is the perfect dog, so long as he's had a good walk in the morning then he's very lazy the rest of the day. He's just started to get his adult teeth and smiles at me when I return home, it looks very comical now he's got proper teeth.

Scuttlebutter · 28/11/2011 23:56

A couple of points about the early wakening (I nearly typed wanking!!). Yy to him being cold - ours hate this, and the two eldest of our three are now wearing their housecoats at night precisely for this reason. By about 5.30 the house is at its coldest and the heating usually restarts around 7 so they need it. You could also look at where they are sleeping and make sure they have a duvet or something similar they can snuggle into and nest in.

The other things that may make a difference to waking early is to remember that he may have woken early when he was at the kennel and is still learning to adjust to his new timetable. Also, it helps if where he is sleeping doesn't get too light - is he in a room with black out curtains? One of ours is prone to waking up much earlier in the summer simply because it gets light so much earlier (sigh). The other thing that may help is to rethink where he is sleeping. Our "blonde alarm clock" was much happier when he moved to sleeping upstairs in the office, and could hear/see us more easily even though we were asleep - he seemed to find this reassuring and conducive to a good nights rest. Generally now if he does wake us, it's because he needs to go out rather than simply feeling like a bit of company. Grin

Loving the sound of NotMost's pup with his pointy grin - I love it when they do this - it's so endearing.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 29/11/2011 07:19

Well... this morning was better. I set the heating to an hour earlier; we're normally up around 6 so I set it to come on just before 5. This'll have to do. He went through til just after 6 and was still quiet when we went down.

I'll get him an extra duvet too.

DH met some other greyhounds on his walk yesterday. The owners were both wearing fleeces with greyhounds on them (and greyhound caps) and had a whole boned chicken in their pockets as well as a selection of chicken feet. And a travel water bowl. Love it!

lostinwales · 29/11/2011 07:56

I've already bought some sturdy walking shoes and a sensible coat, it's the top of a slippery slippery slope isn't it? Grin

What are people's opinions on bed's like these. The couple I know who have three whippets have them for theirs and say they love them. Certainly look toasty warm with room to snuggle. This is what finally swayed DH into saying yes, the thought of a dog that liked to snuggle down melted his heart!

Those coats look lovely.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 29/11/2011 11:21

Ahh, walking out coat arrived. It's not pretty but OMG it is warm and practical! I'll put him in it for tonight while we wait for the house coat.

I think those whippet beds look ace. But the look on that whippet's face is better. Grin

batsintheroof · 29/11/2011 18:52

I want that snuggle bed!!! Just trying to work out how I can justify the purchase to DH when I only just convinced him that the big pointy one NEEDED a memory foam bed......she would adore the snuggle!

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 29/11/2011 21:17

Oh man. Pointy owning is just one big money hole isn't it?

NotMostPeople · 29/11/2011 21:39

So my eBay coat arrived and it's ok. The quality of the finish on the sewing was a bit shoddy in places, not awful but a bit sloppy. However for the price it's fine. Dog wasn't too sure about, but I suspect he'll feel differently when it's colder outside.

nerfmum · 29/11/2011 21:56

my greyhound lurcher wakes about 5 and decides that is time to sneak on to our bed We keep him in our bedroom at night so the cat can get around the house unhindered!
Pointys need a sofa not just a snuggle bed Grin

about coats.....our boy likes to run chase play with lots of other dogs when walking, I find I have to take coat off so he can do this without it getting ripped to shreds. Anyone else with this problem?

lostinwales · 29/11/2011 21:57

I just want my boy to come home, could do with a pointy to snuggle, the hideous weather today created some astonishing gusts of wind that pulled a door off next doors side pass, threw all the bins into the road and scared two of our birds literally to death. I have a very sad 9 year old missing his budgie right now that could do with a cold pointy nose to make him happy (and, of course, the surviving birds and dog will never meet, as my mother pointed out, better for them to go like that than to come home and find feathers sticking to the mouth of the dog Shock)

Indulge me for a moment and gaze at this little sausage of lovelyness could be any dog really at that age but we are going a week on Friday to meet up again and talk about immunisation/insurance/where he is with worming and I have a feeling I will spend the whole time with my nose buried in his fur and forget to listen.

lostinwales · 29/11/2011 22:00

We have already designated a squishy sofa in the kitchen for our pointy one, although as we have under floor heating in there I can't decide where he will want to be (it's on the main sofa in my favourite spot isn't it? Grin)

nerfmum · 29/11/2011 22:12

YES it defiantly will be in your warm spot on the sofa! :)

batsintheroof · 29/11/2011 22:20

My grey won't get up on the sofa unless we remove her bed- refuses to learn to climb stairs as well. I don't think she's normal at all.

nerfmum · 29/11/2011 22:28

lol at not being able to walk up stairs makes me think of the dog in This blog

Scuttlebutter · 29/11/2011 22:41

It's a little known fact that the old fable about the Princess and the Pea actually was really about a greyhound. Grin

It's a very well known fact that yes, your favourite comfy sofa will be the throne of choice for regal pointy lounging and the all important 21 hours of necessary daily sleep.

Bats - Shock !!!! Are you sure she's a grey? Wink

Spaghetti - don't worry, you won't be buying kit at this rate all the time. If you wanted a dog with chisel jawed, granite edged self reliance who does manly things like rescue small children from wells and go fell running for hours then you will be sadly disappointed.... but we love our high maintenance, drama queen, sofa hogging, coat wearing, collar flashing, non recalling, counter surfing, toxic farting pointies. Grin

OldMotherDismass · 29/11/2011 23:27

My whippetty has ignored me all evening after we got caught out in the torrential rain this afternoon. It would appear I have now been demoted to "she who can not be trusted, cos she takes me out on a promising looking walk and the skies open on us".

MissBetsyTrotwood · 30/11/2011 07:18

Haha! This thread continues to tickle me, despite the non arrival of my Ocado delivery yesterday evening and the prospect of looking after 5 children (mine plus my friend's) today while school's shut and NO SAUSAGES. At least the dog's been fed.

He slept with his outdoor coat on last night and we made it through til 6, roughly when the kids started chatting and he realised we were up. Roll on the arrival of the house coat. I went for a tasteless but hilarious rainbow one from the Silver Peacock site. 'Twas the only one left in large except reindeer (no) and camo. This chap is not a camo dog.

My fella's not into the sofa. I think the kids were a bit territorial about it when he arrived. He's just into his sheepskin rugs!
