Just a nosey thread, really. Jasper is 5 months old, a cocker/springer cross. He has one 20-25 minute lead walk a day, and one slightly longer walk with some off lead time. At weekends he gets a longer off lead walk.

I've got a 2 year old Shiba Inu.

She's not allowed off lead but gets a few kms in the morning, a good walk with DH in the evening and all day off leash in the garden.

She does Shiba 500s if she's got too much energy Grin

Actually, she's darn near perfect as she will go for as much or as little as is on offer with no problem. I had a knee injury earlier this year and she had much shorter walks; she was fine.

Beamur · 23/11/2011 15:05

Cross breed, 9 years old, used to be able to go all day but slowing down a bit now. Walked twice a day for at least 20/30 minutes, part of which will be high energy off lead ball chasing. Longer walks at weekend, or during the week if DP has time.
Very calm and well behaved in the house, no mad 5 minutes.

belindarose · 23/11/2011 15:10

My springer is 6 months and usually gets one walk of 40 mins or more off lead. On a very bad day (I'm very sick today) he will cope without any, but needs lots of extra training/ indoor play to avoid lunacy.

MartyrStewart · 23/11/2011 15:13

12mo Lab (it's his birthday on Friday Grin ) . Has one 30min off lead run in the woods, one 45min walk on and off lead and another 40min off lead run. Longer at weekends, anything up to a couple of hours.

He's actually fine with less than this, but the more exercise he gets, the less bother he is Grin

PuddinAforeDinner · 23/11/2011 15:13

We have a 11 month old springer.

During the week he gets 45 mins walk first thing in the morning. Sometimes he gets a 15-20 min lead walk at lunchtime or training. He then gets 1-1.5 hours walk in the evening.

At the weekends he will sometimes get a longer walk during the day (across the hills), then just the occasional 15/20 mins around the orchard (off lead).

This may have to change a little when the new pup comes next month Smile

Bassett Hound about 9 years old.
When we got her 4 years ago she would happily do 2 2-3 hour walks a day. I couldn't quite manage that every day so we wenaed her down to 2 30min walks or 1 hour long walk. Now she is older she doesn't walk everyday but has lots of time in the huge garden. During summer she spent most of the day out there.
She should have more but circumstances have changed and I don't have the time for 2 walks every day. She is happy and quite a lazy house dog so sleeps in the corner away from the kids most of the time

mistlethrush · 23/11/2011 15:21

11 year old mutt gets a good hr walk in the middle of the day. More at the weekend.

When she was younger she had a 30 mins run first thing, an hour or so in the middle of the day, and ideally another nip out later. Also ideally including some sustained frisbee chasing. She was also quite happy to do a 15 mile walk (she probably went 25) with plenty of racing around with 40 mins for lunch - but not sure she could do this now.

She's sort of collie sized - possibly a bit of grey hound, maybe some Alsatian, possibly lab or retriever, might even be some ridgeback - but difficult to be specific Grin

RunnerHasbeen · 23/11/2011 15:21

6 year old PBGV, doesn't get much speed up so not much running around, more sniffing. He gets two short walks (10-15 mins) and two long ones (approx 40 mins) but normally a bigger hill walk at weekends.

It is amazing though that when it is raining he seems not to need any walks at all (his refusal, not ours, we usually try to drag him out and spend "walks" pulling him out of doorways or shelters wishing he would just get on and do his business).

malinois · 23/11/2011 15:24

4yo Malinois (unsurprisingly). Two 45-minute off-lead walks per day, plus 30 minute obedience session. Longer walk (3-4 hours) off-lead at weekend plus 1-2 hours Schutzhund training.

elastamum · 23/11/2011 15:31

3 labradoodles. 1 hr in the morning, 20 mins at lunch then 20mins in eve. I take them all out in our fields last thing at about 10pm for a quick leg stretch if it isnt pouring

wildfig · 23/11/2011 15:34

I've just got back in from a 90 minute walk through the woods with my two basset hounds (6 and 2). Both are now snoring on the sofa, and although one thinks she's done quite enough for the day, thank you, the other would quite happily go out again for as long as I'd walk with him for.

LtEveDallas · 23/11/2011 15:35

2 yr old Collie Springer Cross (with maybe a bit of whippet tucked in somewhere).

45 mins on and off lead across fields at 0630
45 mins off lead in woods at 1230 (with her friends, so it's 45 mins of non-stop tearing about and trying to catch pheasants)
1 hour on and off lead across fields at 1800

At the weekend if we are at home she gets one good 2 hour walk mid morn across the fields - she might get another in the evening. If we are at the coast she gets an hour on the beach at about 0800 and an hour or two on the beach at about 1600 (depending on if we are going out!)

She needs a lot of walking - Good job I love her!

thestringcheesemassacre · 23/11/2011 15:36

7 year old GSD. He gets about 1.5 hours every day. But can make do with an hour if we're pushed.

Wildfig, i love bassets. Really want some. Do they howl much?

wildfig · 23/11/2011 15:41

Mine don't howl at all (as far as I know). They have quite loud barks, though, which is handy for burglar deterring! I've heard them baying when they get together with their friends at the dog sitters; it's a lovely sound, almost musical. [sad hound lover]

MiraNova · 23/11/2011 15:54

2 Setters, 4 and 6 years old, get an off-lead walk of an hour every day, plus time in a largish garden.

toboldlygo · 23/11/2011 16:19

Siberian huskies, aged 2.5 and nearly 3, 1hr 30 mins morning and 1hr 30 mins night as a minimum (on lead, cross country), canix (5k) 2-3 times per week, pulling scooter (distance depending on conditions) 2 times per week, 1hr obedience class per week, 1hr agility class per week. Free running in enclosed field after lessons, up to an hour a time.

If they've had a good long run the day before they will happily sleep most of the day but if you happen to rattle the lead they are always, always ready to go again.

higgle · 23/11/2011 16:24

Staffie, aged 10. 30 mins am, 30 mins pm and at least one long walk of 2 hours at weekends. He looks at me in a way that makes me feel very guilty indeed if any of this does not take place.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 23/11/2011 16:25

Wow, toboldlygo, that is some commitment

I'm expecting to gradually increase Jasper's walk time over the next 6 months or so until he's getting a steady 1.5 hours a day, plus endless games of fetch in the garden. He is 3/4 cocker, and the springer bit is very much diluted, so he isn't madly high energy. That said, at weekends he'll probably get significantly longer walks as I do live near the Peak District and we love a hike.

toboldlygo · 23/11/2011 16:39

I weigh a lot less than I did a few years ago. Grin

Slubberdegullion · 23/11/2011 17:28

Wow toboldlygo, just wow. I see what others mean about huskies being a lifestyle choice rather than just a pet. You must be fearsomely fit.

1.5 year old lab here. Usually about 2 hours ish a day comprising of a good 1.5 hours in the morning, off lead, retrieving (mostly from the river) +++, and then a half an hour lead-off lead in the afternoon. Once a week she will get a much longer walk, a half or all dayer tramp somewhere.

Elibean · 23/11/2011 17:37

7-8 month old Lab cross (quite long legged - lurcher? Staffy? Beagle/pointer?) and he gets at least an hour mid morning, and then just under an hour in the afternoon.

He can easily do more, but this is plenty...as long as he gets a good play in with another dog/pup! No play, and he's still full of beans Hmm

He has a largish garden (by London standards) to chase squirrels in, but I do have to crate him when left alone for the odd hour here and there as he chews otherwise. So gets plenty of sleep too!

Elibean · 23/11/2011 17:39

Forgot to say, most of it off-lead. Its only a 5 minute walk to the common/river/park.

Sibling4 · 23/11/2011 18:16

Mini dachshund. 4.5 yrs old. Will do anything to avoid a walk. Runs and hides when she sees her lead and tries to duck into every pub we pass when we do persuade her out

She will quite enjoy a stroll once she is forced out. But will not walk in Rain and takes lengthy detours to avoid mud and puddles

That said she is a tenacious dude and a true hound at heart and has been known to cover 5 miles and take off after deer
