Just a nosey thread, really. Jasper is 5 months old, a cocker/springer cross. He has one 20-25 minute lead walk a day, and one slightly longer walk with some off lead time. At weekends he gets a longer off lead walk.

2 beagles, they have a walk in the morning and a short run in the evening. they seem happy enough. They do like a sleep

oh your dogs sound lovely doinmecleanin, was your greyhound a rescue dog?

I am just so used to having border collies that i wonder whether it's best to just get another one.....I don't think i can yet anyway

DooinMeCleanin · 24/11/2011 17:34

My greyhound is not technically mine. She belongs to a local rescue and is looking for her forever home, but has been here months now. No-one is interested in her.

When people enquire about the dogs the lady who runs the rescue emails them photos of all/any dogs they have that would be suited to their circumstances. No-one ever picks her out Sad. Although this is good in a way, we are very happy with her and would miss her dearly. It does, however, mean that one less rescue space is available. It's such a shame because she is a really a wonderful dog and would make someone an excellent pet. She is very affectionate, especially with children.

RogerMelly · 24/11/2011 17:36

awww can i have her? Wink:o My old friend fosters for greyhound rescue as well. She started out fostering for dogs trust and then moved onto greyhound. She seems to have the dogs a long time as well.

DooinMeCleanin · 24/11/2011 17:40

I think the problem is that they have a photo of her just stood looking a greyhound. They don't have photos of her showing her personality like the ones I have where she is acting as cushion for a small child or wandering about with a stolen crisp packet on her head. I might mention that next time I speak to them.

RogerMelly · 24/11/2011 17:41

you must, she sounds great :)

Roger, my whippet was a rescue and hates water of all types (apart, surprisingly from being given a shower - though I guess that is warm). He even walks around puddles, rather than through them! We also reackon he seems to only like temperatures between 16-18oC, anything lower and he starts shivering, anything higher and he flops down whereever it is slightly cooler. When he is running he is a beautiful sight to behold, when he is not running his preferance is for sleep.

This is completely different from what I am used to as I am also used to collies. However, he is lovely and he fits with our family now in the way I doubt a collie would simply because I don't have the time and energy to spend on a dog as demanding as a collie when the dc are still very young. Whippetty is very easy going and is happy so long as he can run sometimes, is given good food and has a comfy place to sleep (which he does most of the time).

RogerMelly · 24/11/2011 18:40

oh your whipper sounds lovely as well :)

how awful though to think he hates water so much. It makes you wonder what some of these poor rescue dogs have been through before people like us have them

hellhasnofury · 24/11/2011 18:48

11 year old Labrador/Collie cross. He gets an hour most days and a good couple of hours at weekends. In the summer months he swims most of the way round our walk but in the winter we keep him to the paths. He is able to spend most of his walk off lead chasing the scent of hitherto unseen to anyone but him wild animals.

Housewifefromheaven · 24/11/2011 21:51

5 month pug. Aprox 30-40 minutes per day. Unless it's raining (her choice not mine)!

OldMotherDismass · 24/11/2011 22:35

Oh, I don't think he hates water because of bad experiences Roger, I think that is just him. Apparently many sighthounds hate water, unlike collies who go wading straight in as soon as they see any.

Three greyhounds here. Weekdays, daily walk of around 1 - 1.25 hrs. Depending on time of year, time of day, this may involve some off lead hurtling. Weekends, we go on longer walks, around l.5 - 2 hours. Exceptions are very heavy rain/snow or if it is very hot, when they are walked early in the morning. Like all pointies, they loathe the rain, and will jump back in the car if we arrive in a downpour. As well as the basic walks, we go to a greyhound field around two or three times a month for an hour's off lead play - it's lovely to watch them doing zoomies in safety. DH runs and takes the two boys with him once or twice a week for a gentle 5K trot. They love this. Elderly dowager duchess with shoulder arthritis doesn't go running, but does do hydrotherapy - loves her sessions on the treadmill. Training classes as necessary at certain times of the year usually evenings.
