Just a nosey thread, really. Jasper is 5 months old, a cocker/springer cross. He has one 20-25 minute lead walk a day, and one slightly longer walk with some off lead time. At weekends he gets a longer off lead walk.

Grin

Mouse will lie down and look mournful when we call him for a walk. But he loves it once out!

OldMotherDismass · 23/11/2011 19:04

I have a whippet. When it is raining he hates to go out (though he is taken anyway).

He generally gets 40 mins in the morning, 40 mins mid-afternoon and about 40 mins or so in the evening. At the weekend at least one of those walks will be for a couple of hours.

He is only ever let off the lead in a "safe" area (so not for a normal walk, but usually in a safe area in a longer walk at the weekend).

Melindaaa · 23/11/2011 19:11

7 month old shih tzu. Happy with short walks or no walks at all, but capable of long walks if we fancy one. He is perfect for our family.

Avantia · 23/11/2011 19:12

18 month lab - about 2 hrs a day mainly off lead - which she spends running around and rolling on the ground especailly after being for a swim ! - why do they do that Confused

DrNortherner · 23/11/2011 19:16

3 year old lab. He gets approx 60 mins Mon to Thurs when we work but much more at weekends. We both run and he regularly comes on 6/8 milers with me.

He can take more or less.

RedwingWinter · 23/11/2011 20:31

Husky/mal cross, maybe 2 years old. He gets a one hour walk and a half hour walk each day, on lead, usually with other dogs for the shorter walk. About five days a week he gets an hour to run around in a fenced area with a couple of other dogs, and on weekends he gets a longer walk, maybe two hours.

Zakinthos · 23/11/2011 20:43

2 yr old cavalier/bichon frise cross. Has 30-45 mins in am and short walk in afternoon, normally about 15 mins. She will get longer walks at the weekend or if the dog walker takes her when I am at work! She is never over excited about walks but seems to enjoy them once she is out. Hates heavy rain - will try to drag me home. She gets taken in the car to collect kids from places too just to try to add interest to her day but I don't think she is too bothered-sleeps all day unless food or walk on the agenda!

NotMostPeople · 23/11/2011 22:19

7 month lurcher gets between 45 mins and 1.5 hours a day depending on what I'm up to. I love it when he makes friends and runs about like a loon. He loves a good runaround followed by a lazy day, works for me.

Oeufman · 23/11/2011 23:04

9 year old boxer who loves to wait in car as I walk her 2 year old terrier best friend! Try regularly to entice her out - but she spends walk trying to turn round back to base.

Her day involves moving from dog bed to dog bed, following me round house. When in office working she sleeps under the desk.

HarderToKidnap · 24/11/2011 12:34

8 year old toy breed with a busted ACL. He used to go all day but now we have 15 minutes off lead in the morning and 30 minutes off lead in the afternoon. Weekends is more, up to an hour or so. Any more and he starts limping.

DooinMeCleanin · 24/11/2011 12:40

2 sighthounds: However much I chose to give them, unless it is raining or 6am. Any exercise is too much for Greyhound if it is raining or 6am. they normally get 2 x 20-30 minutes.

1 terrier x: 1 half hour run and one 45 minute walk or two one hour long walks. I tend to give him a good run out with the bike where possible and a shorter walk on an evening. The terrier cannot be let off lead completely as he cannot be trusted to recall everytime. He has a long line and will fetch on it, but won't run the way the hounds do, so he needs more due to lack of off lead exercise. Myself and three different trainers have tried training him and have come to the conclusion that while he can be improved upon wrt recall he will never be 100% trustworthy so it is unsafe to let him off in unsecure areas. We have no secure places where dogs are allowed off leash around here. I do keep emailing the council and asking them why this. There are plenty of suitable places around. They just need a fence is all.

3 Rhodesian Ridgebacks... 3, 14 mths and 4 mths
4 mth old gets the school run 2 x day thats 20 mins about 3 days a week
a field run with the big girls of about 20 mins 2 x a week
and a walk around the block 2 x 10 mins other days.
the 3 yr old is lazy ass hypothyroid but she gets biked 20 mins 2 x a week, field walks 3 x week (40 mins) and a good 6 mile 1-2 hr walk 2 x a week along with the 14 mth old...
14 mth old get school run 3 days a week plus slow biking 2 x a week and 2 mile evening road walks along with lazy ass a couple of nights a week

Generally they play and beat each other up a lot too, so I reckon 1-2 hrs a day on average once fully grown

largeginandtonic · 24/11/2011 13:09

German shorthaired Pointer (GSP) is one. He goes for a run/walk with dh before work for 40 mins. Sometimes school run in the day and out again in the evening for a workout ie ball chasing or pulls dh on his landrollers (like Caesar)

He goes for longer walks at the weekend. Would go every time we left the house has tons of energy!

wordfactory · 24/11/2011 15:50

Border terrier six months old nearly.

I have a border collie (did have two :( ) and I walk her 4 miles a day which takes about an hour and quarter and walk about 2 hrs a day at the weekend and she still isn't wore out!

GrimmaTheNome · 24/11/2011 16:43

Standard dachshund -doesn't seem to need any particular amount of exercise, and on a nasty day would prefer to stay in. If I take him out locally by myself, he's ready to turn round after a shit and a few sniffs.

But if we take him out to the country together, he'll do miles, climb mountains perfectly happily. Very adaptable dog!

RogerMelly · 24/11/2011 16:52

are whippets and greyhounds funny about the rain because of being so short haired and skinny? or are your two just particually spoilt, oldmotherdismass and doinmecleanin?

I was thinking of getting a rescue greyhound to go with my other dog as I lost my old dog pretty recently :( The children wanta jack russel though....but I am unsure because of the barking/yapping and snapping, though i know some are lovely. But can JR walk far? I live very rurally so we go off into fields and woods...but my other dog cahses hares, tracks foxes and chase deer also I presume a JR will do the same?

RedwingWinter · 24/11/2011 16:53

Dooin, I hear you on the fences, we could do with one of those nearer to us!

ezzie21 · 24/11/2011 17:11

6 yr old lab and 3 yr old westie get 2 walks a day

an hour in the morning to swim/roll in shit/chase balls

30 minutes in the evening on lead walk

longer shit rolling walks at weekends

RogerMelly · 24/11/2011 17:13

oh ezzie21, tell me about it. My dog is tracking the foxes constantly atm. She rolled in their crap FIVE times last week Hmm

crazyspaniel · 24/11/2011 17:14

I have two working cockers, they get 2 x 40 minute walks a day, off lead.

OP - your dog is still a pup. The recommended walking time for a puppy is 5 minutes per day for every month of the dog's age, so 25 minutes a day would be fine. I think those guidelines are more for breeds which are prone to hip problems, but I've always used them as a rough guide.

AntarcticEther · 24/11/2011 17:18

8 year old German Shepherd. 30-40 minute off the lead about 4-5 times a week , maybe a day off and maybe hydrotherapy session on non walk days .

I hate it . She would go all day , and gets very restless but she has arthritis in her elbow and a bad hip . Use to walk for miles .

DooinMeCleanin · 24/11/2011 17:19

My whippet is fine in the rain, but I have had her since a puppy and socialised her with rain, snow and fireworks deliberately. She does not like the cold and will not go out unless she has a coat on.

My greyhound is a big softy who only likes temperate, dry weather and would like to remain unaware that times between 11pm and 11am exist for reasons other than sleeping. I do believe this is common in greyhounds. I think it is because they are skinny and naturally lazy, not unlike me apart from the skinny bit Grin She will walk for miles, but prefers not to. She starts sighing and huffing and puffing once she deems it is home time Grin

My terrier x is a JRT cross. They'll walk far, yes. And run far. Chasing is an issue but could be trained.

Popbiscuit · 24/11/2011 17:20

West Highland Terrier (age 3). She does the school run with us most days a week (30 minutes / twice a day) and then I give her an hour-long dedicated muddy walk through the woods or trails to chase squirrels and chipmunks.

She then spends the rest of the day in her basket near the fire, twitching happily.
