Spanish Galgo's - Distressing

I wanted to post to make people aware of the plight of these beautiful dogs.

The Spanish Galgo is otherwise known as a Spanish Greyhound, is a sighthound, but not directly related to the Greyhound. These dogs are calm and gentle. More than 90% are considered cat-friendly and they are very tolerant of children. These dogs are beautiful.

But, they are heavily overbred in Spain where they are used for hunting. The hunting season lasts for only 4 months of the year, after which due to Spanish tradition, the dogs are killed by some of the most horrendous means imaginable (hanging, burning, thrown alive into deep wells, for example). It seems that estimates are 50,000 dogs are killed in this way each year, but this figure may be closer to 100,000.

Even in their lifes they are treated badly, being kept in windowless shacks and deprived of food and/or water.

I don't want to give specific links as some are extremely distressing, but google Spanish Galgo and you will get an idea....

I have a whippet, so have a soft spot for sight hounds, some things made me cry. The absolute cruelty of humans is sickening.
