Just been discharged from the whole pregnant-after-miscarriage monitoring (not 100% out of the woods yet but 11 weeks and she's happy enough to put me back into the normal ante-natal care system). About to start going public with it all.

Bets on when the first "oh so you'll be getting rid of the dogs and cats" comes up?

I'm 25 weeks pregnant and got diagnosed with SPD Tuesday to which my FIL responded 'so you can't walk a dog and have a baby, you can give me money and I'll have to have your dog when the baby's born'. Erm no I can walk fine at the moment, so can my husband and he's my dog, he was here before the baby!

Oh and congratulations too, so sorry I didn't start my post with that

Congratulations. I know it might feel scary right up to the time you're holding your child - at least, it did for me - but this is looking so good now. Really, I'm so glad for you.

As for the sillies who may focus on cats and dogs, stuff 'em - this isn't about taking anyone away, this is about adding someone!

deja We got a GSD when I was 3 months pregnant with DS now 12. It was a steep learning curve but the bond between my son and dog was amazing. Obviously I wouldnt recommend it for the faint hearted, but I have to say DH did all the hard work with him, I just got to enjoy and feed him and walk him.

IME it isnt so much dogs that get maligned for being 'baby killers' its cats.

"oh, make sure you get a pram/cot net as the cat will smother your baby"
"you need to get rid of the cat, it will scratch the baby/eat the baby/bite the baby"

My cat didnt go near my babies - if anything she avoided the screeching, grabbing noise machines.

My bet is for next week, the good news will have sunk in to family/friends and they will discuss it over the weekend and then talk to you about rehoming animals on Tuesday.

I agree with Shopping. When I had dd2 I had two lazy moggies and one epileptic JRT. No-one muttered a word about the terrier but the cats may as well have been the Devil himself

I owned all three when I had dd1 and she lived through babyhood without having her soul sucked out by the evil moggies or maybe she didn't and that is why she has an aversion to early mornings? She is a vampire with no soul

Cat's an easy case - she's got one back leg missing so can't jump up onto things very easily anyway - cots and things are too high for her (it's not a way I recommend to keep the mog off the kitchen benches though)!

No fugging idea of how I'm going to walk two large dogs and a baby in a park full of squirrels. Hubby's bright idea involved "oh tie them to the pram"... he can't see the problem with the idea of attaching two very very chase driven dogs to a wheeled implement in a park full of squirrels somehow!

I grew up with cats (my mum found a kitten dumped in a bin when she was pregnant with me whom we had for most of my childhood), my brother grew up with cats - the family's not thick enough to challenge the cat thing thank god! Main reason we got the dogs was I wanted a kid of mine to grow up WITH animals really - because I remember all those teenage years confiding in the cat about how I planned to marry Bros (ALL of them) and grand masterplans for my future life.

I had 3 cats and 2 dogs when I got pregnant with my first DC.
To add to all the anti cat comments I also worked in a animal rehoming centre throughout my pregnancy and frequently got the tale that 'Ooooh if a dog jumps up at you whilst you're pregnant it means your baby will be scarred".
Despite being jumped on constantly (by dogs that is ) DD was not born looking like Freddy Kruger.

WRT the bet... well my mum had known I was pregnant with DD1 for a couple of weeks but lived a distance away so I didn't see her. Her first visit since the news was accomapnied with baby clothes and a cat net.

I still have the baby clothes (DDs are teenagers)... the cat net hit the bin within 5 minutes of Mum leaving!

I'll give your friends and family til next Tuesday. Just try to avoid telling them that you'll see them next Tuesday... in both manners of the expression! :o

I'm using a sling to carry the baby whilst dog walking - allows me to deal with the muddy paths. We have a Wilkinet if it helps.

Oh, and my Mum went on and on about the cats being rabid baby killers who would "smother the baby because they are attracted to the smell of milk". Needless to say they avoid like the plague.

wrap sling for the baby. i use one when walking ralph and have steven with me.

could you hire a dog walker to help you out in the first couple of months? Or rope in friends who have dogs and will walk yours (one at a time) for you.

It isnt easy (remembers trying to walk young GSD with a pram, pissing rain and crying!) but it can be done.
