New puppy - advice needed

I have a new puppy that we brought home yesterday, she's a nine week old springer spaniel and I was hoping someone could help me out with a few queries.

She was treated for fleas on Thursday and I have checked her over carefully and she doesn't have them any more, however by scratching at the bites she has really irritated her skin and she keeps biting and whimpering at the bites. She seemed pretty distressed and it left her skin looking sore (she just has one patch on her rump) so in an attempt to soothe the skin I rubbed a little olive oil on to as I figured it wouldn'tmake her ill if she licked it. Can anyone suggest anything that would be better that olive oil or confirm that it is ok to use?

The second question I have is regarding jabs. She had her parvovirus jab last week (the owner of the mum organised it) and I wondered if she needs anymore jabs soon?

TIA

Hi there,

She will need her second jab a week after the first, and then another week before she is allowed down in public places.

You need to find out which brand of vaccine she was given to make sure she is given the same at the second jab, or a compatible one (i think some brand names differ, but the actual stuff is the same).

Ask the vet about the itchy sore bit when you see her for jabs. Also what flea stuff did you use? The supermarket ones etc are dire. Lots of people use frontline, but there are reports that it is no longer as effective as it once was. I use advocate on our dogs, it does worms and fleas. You can only get it via prescription from your vet.

Thanks for the advice, went to the vet on Monday and turns ut she,d had an allergic reaction to the flea stuff - all sorted now, first jab done and she is booked in for the next one too.
