Footwear for dog walking?

I often walk 'off road' and currently wear bog standard wellies. In winter I add thermal socks. Was thinking of asking for a pair of Hunters for CHristmas, are they worth it and do they keep feet warm?

What do you wear?

Had Hunters which kept feet dry but not warm. I then invested in a pair of Dubarry's which aren't cheap but I've had them over 2 years. I seriously wear them in winter without socks they keep your feet that warm. I've walked through mud, water, snow and stood on the side of freezing cold rugby pitches and my feet have never got cold or wet!

Hunters are awful since they sold out, freezing cold, thin and don't stay waterproof for long.

Dubarrys good, also Merrell do similar if you're fashion conscious. If not, can't recommend Aigle wellies enough, the Parcours ones are designed as a walking welly, the neoprene lining is toasty warm. I also wear Salomon walking boots and trail shoes on drier days.

Hunters are now made in China and not the same quality that the UK ones were.

I have Aigle which are really toasty, but the design I have don't have a lug at the back to get them off (stupid, stupid design which makes my other foot muddy when I try to get it off).

If I had the money I would have dubarrys though.

Have got a pair of Ariat Country boots , like Dubarry but have the price , I think I paid £129 for them .

i've got merrell walking boots and hunter short wellies. both comfy and waterproof. i have raynauds so get very cold feet. the best socks i've found are the equafleece ones

Walking boots - mine are North Face, worn with 2 pairs of socks (normal cotton + walking socks). Keep my feet perfectly warm and dry. Much more comfortable than wellies IMO.

(agree with all the points above re Hunters, Barbour wells much better imo)

Walking boots good year round for mud/wet grass - if its properly dry, walking sandals.

If its not 'welly weather' then walking boots or I have been know to wear my flip flop trainers which are very comfortable Grin

I wear my Dubarry's in the summer as the woods near us have adders in them and I get paranoid about one going up my trouser leg!

Men's basic Le Chameau wellies most of the year (lots of nettly long grass on my walks, and I get bitten easily) with wool shooting socks inside during the winter. Am looking into a pair of sheepskin insoles though.

Would be v interested in snow boot suggestions, if we're going to get the annual 'surprise whiteout' again. A friend had a very toasty looking pair of North Face Abby snowboots but I don't think they go up to a 42.

Hunters are shite now. Thin, nasty, very disappointed with my latest pair. I am going to get a pair of Le Chameau but need to find a shop where I can try them on.

DD has a pair of Muck Boots, which are neoprene lined, and they were about £60. They keep her feet toastie, but she will pull on a pair of ski socks with them if she know she's going to be up to her ankles in snow.

Agree with what people have said about Hunter-type wellies - thin and rubbish at keeping your feet warm unless you have 60 pairs of socks on.

Run if it's not welly weather, DD will wear her Birkies, cheap-o flip flops, Vans, Converse, and has been known to walk the dog for miles barefoot in the summer. A pair of comfy trainers do fine for me.

I've previously got footwear from Lands End - they do a nice lightweight Trail Runner which is perfect for summer and various ankle boots which are great for winter. Can't get on with wellies at all. This winter, I experimented and have bought some Mountain Horse stable boots which are blissfully comfortable, supportive, grippy, waterproof and toasty warm. See info here

I had some Hunters years ago & they were crap.

I used to wall along pavements to get to fields iyswim & the soles/heels wore away really quickly & soon had no grip.

I walk in walking boots unless it´s very wet/deep mud.
