He works particularly well at 6am when carrier bags get caught in trees at the back of the house. And will he buggery stop growling and pacing until someone has gotten up to fully investigate said carrier bag

Yes, this Devil Dog. The other two slept soundly through the whole thing .

As much as I want to be annoyed at being woken up at 6am he was doing what he is supposed to do and alerting us to a strange and potentially threatening noise.

It's odd that he chose to do most of growling outside the dc's bedroom door. I always thought he'd protect me, but he clearly thinks I am more able to fight off carrier bags with possibly evil intentions

It scared the crap out of us because he has never done this before so we did think somone was in the house.

Mouse-pup has discovered he can bark: he's barked so far at a squirrel, leaves blowing in the wind, and someone walking past the house 50ft away as seen through glass doors and a window.

He doesn't stir when the doorbell rings

Mine always growls when she sees the cats coming in the cat flap, she can see the outside of the catflap through the french doors.
She never growls or barks when the doorbell rings though.
She's obviously only interested in very small burglars wearing fur coats

Our dog doorbell is way too sensitively tuned! It's of the sheltie variety and this type are known for just loving their own sound. The dog doorbell is most often set off at 3am when the local cats decide to fight . But cars driving down the road at 4am can do it, as can the gritting lorry at 2am (that delight is to start again soon, I fear).

Our dog doorbell is nearly 10 years old and I'm waiting for it to become a little less efficient with age. But its sensors are as sharp as ever!

Annoyingly, we have a copycat doorbell of the Jack Russell/ Spaniel variety. This doorbell will not go off alone, but if the sheltie doorbell activates, it will set it off.

A night of unbroken sleep would be nice....
