OMG, I think we've found our rescue pup

I'm so excited! And scared

He's a 4.5 month old lab X, and we're waiting on a homecheck. Also have a few problems getting the whole family to meet him before the weekend after next, but the foster carer is lovely and says she'll see what she can do to hold him for us if we're the right home for him.

I need a crate (he's used to one), a fleece bed, some food, treats, cigar-style hide chews (his favourite), a clicker or a whistle?? and someone to tell me to CALM DOWN

Did someone once say Savic crates were good? Are clickers easy to find from local petshops? Is my life about to be turned upside down (more than it already is?)

He looks like lab/beagle to me (and his foster mum), though others have said 'lurcher in there'/'staffy in there' and yet others have said 'definitely not any of those'. The lab part is clear though. He's sort of gold with white blaze and paws, 4-5 months old, a neutered male and has had his jabs. He came in very thin (was dumped in a bin with his litter mates ) but is filling out - apparently he looks like a long-legged labrador run [soppy grin] with melty eyes.

His foster mum says he's very people orientated, has no table manners (though is gentle - just used to being hungry, plus a Lab x obviously!), is fine with other animals and all the kids he's met, is very biddable and already clean in the house apart from the odd accident when no one listens. He cried the first night in his crate in her house for 5 mins, then she put the radio on and he was fine.

Big challenge: he cries when left alone, as in when his foster mum takes the other dogs out into the garden and leaves him indoors - he doens't like being alone and is not at all used to it. I will need him to cope with short spells alone (up to an hour) eventually - though obviously will drop all but essentials when he first arrives. I want him to feel safe and loved before I start introducing alone time. I've not done that bit before - my last dog had a buddy from the off. Any tips welcome!

His current name is Risk, ironically. No idea if we'll keep or change - and don't dare think too much till we're sure we're getting him.

Pm was actually asking if it was that pup He looks lovely. You must change his name though, our pup was given a name by the rescue that even the rescue staff sniggered at, so they wont expect you to keep it.

LOL - yes - popping yourself into your crate sounds like a good idea!

Risk - nah, you have to change that, it's far too negative. He wont care if you change it!

My then 3 year old insisted we could not have a dog that was 'big or jumpy' We got a springer spaniel pup who bounces all over the place, and is almost as big as her

We taught her to turn her back on him if he jumps and say 'No!'

She loves him and will now happily ask to stroke any dog she see's, even if she can only reach their knees

Time to start thinking of names...

I did think Biscuit last night....but am thinking (speaking of Risks) that I may let the dds name him...though I may have to keep a right-to-veto.

I let my kids chose his new name, as his original one was awful. Thankfully, my youngest insisted on Jake. The last time I let the kids pick a pets name we ended up with a rabbit called SuperBunny-Rainbow, I was very relieved the youngest had more sense

Hmm, well, the dds are currently fixed on 'Zero'. Could be worse, as can relate to your rabbit: our guppies were named Treasure, Rosie-Daisy, FlowerPetal and Fatty

Not yet! Am hoping to go and see him with dd2 tomorrow, and the homechecker is coming this week. They want us to take him this weekend, but unfortunately DH is on a course - and can't defer, we tried. So it may be the following Saturday, if we can't get there during the week.

Feels like a long time to wait, but it does give me time to borrow crate, buy bed, bowls, clicker, food etc! And we have a carpenter and plumber working here this week, be much quieter by the time 'Risk' arrives, which is good.

Oh dear, am talking like he's already ours [nervous]!
