So glad she is feeling better BWF. It's been a royal rollercoaster ride for you these last few days.

I know hepatic means an issue with her liver and googled Lizcat's last post. Are they planning to do further tests to establish the cause?

brokenwingedflier · 15/09/2011 23:11

@Lizcat, if porto-systemic shunt means congenital defect around liver/digestive system then yes she does.

MJ, the vet talked about the possibility of more tests but he seemed to think that it might not be worth it because we know now that she needs to take lactulose and a low protein diet and will whip her into the vets at the first sign of anything like this.

brokenwingedflier · 15/09/2011 23:32

If anyone has anymore questions ask them quickly and I will ask the vet when we go in to PICK HER UP. [

The last 48 hours has felt like a week. Thank you so much doghouse Grin

OP posts:
MotherJack · 16/09/2011 10:14

Well that sounds very encouraging news if it is able to be managed in that way. I did read it can take a bit of practice to get the lactulose dose right.... have you plenty of newspapers?!?

Hope you have a great weekend, whatever Smile

Lizcat · 16/09/2011 11:19

Have they mentioned the enormously successful surgery for portosystemic shunts? As this really is the best long term solution. I would suggest you read the information at www.vet.utk.edu/clinical/sacs/shunt/faq.php this is just one of the best on-line resources about shunts, but many places in the UK do this surgery.

brokenwingedflier · 16/09/2011 11:37

Thanks Lizcat, I will ask when we pick her up. I am waiting for vet to ring.

:) Great to read that pooch is coming home safe and sound, I'm so very glad to learn this.

I hope that Lennox will be as lucky. Today may well be his last.

brokenwingedflier · 16/09/2011 17:18

She is home but not safe and sound. Sorry for lack of happy ending.

I am going to start a thread called, 'convalescent puppy'. Thanks all for your support.

Sad What has happened?

brokenwingedflier · 16/09/2011 17:55

The next four days are important and then we go back to vet. The vet is not happy. Nor am I. Nor is doggy neighbour. Vet said, 'This is the beginning. She is home but not better. I have started a new thread.

OP posts:
brokenwingedflier · 16/09/2011 20:23

Big thank you to everyone on this thread. She is alive and has eaten her vet tinned food in the kitchen and had her tummy stroked. And taken her abs and lactulose. Vet was very gloomy and next 4 days are critical. No walks. (Lizcat, I asked your questions but they couldn't answer them. It was great that I took my doggy neighbour; she was able to fill the gaps in my q and a

brokenwingedflier · 16/09/2011 20:28

They don't know what caused it. If it was congenital, why did it not happen before now? If not, what caused it? Anyway, she is home, eating and drinking and barking. And it proves me right in the argument about whether or not we were having puppies (VALHALLA, IT WAS A ONE-SIDED FIGHT AND NEVER EVER GOING TO HAPPEN.

maybe a viral thing??

two of my cats have had something similar as kittens and are now fine.it was a long slog for one of them though.good luck.

brokenwingedflier · 16/09/2011 21:24

Thanks. She is home and happy. As opposed to Tuesday night when she was manic and unresponsive. It has been a long week. No walks for four days. I feel an inadequate dogmother. I have instructions to follow and I am following them. Dh is away so I think she will grace our bed tonight. She must be confused after her blindness.

brokenwingedflier · 01/10/2011 13:41

Just an update and a thank you. She went back to the vet's for 2 nights 21st-23rd Sept (because she appeared to be shivering and I did not want to take any chances). Since then she has been eating her low protein food and taking abs. We took her to the vet on Monday. Vet seemed optomistic.

@Lizcat, we are insured and we have spoken to vet about her having the op in Solihull, but vet seems to think we should wait.

Thanks, all. I was planning the burial when I first posted. If nothing else it has knocked the VERY idea of breeding on the VERY head.

OP posts:
brokenwingedflier · 01/10/2011 13:43

And she is not blind anymore. I took her blindness to be permanent at the time.

Keeping my fingers and everything else crossed that her recovery continues upwards and onwards. Jeez, you must've been petrified these past weeks, poor thing. Glad to hear that her eyesights restored too, that's great news. Big hugs from me and mine to you and yours.

brokenwingedflier · 12/10/2011 20:14

I don't need any of your lovely support and advice; just checking back in to give an update. We took pooch to vet today and he said that he was pleased with her progress. She is very thin, and she has been confined to the house since she had that awful first night. He said she can go on 2 fiveminute walks a day not, starting tomorrow. She is eating low protein food that I get from the vet (KD, if anyone is interested). We are going to start giving her some white rice tomorrow. I think that she will be taking lactulose in the long term. The vet does not want to see her again for a month, which was the very very best news.

Behaviour wise she is a bit nippy but I can forgive that because she has gone through gawd knows what in her doggy little brain. She hasn't even had a walk since I first posted.

Massive thanks to you all but especially to Lizcat and Valhalla.xx
