Dog may get referred to eye specialist - Surrey / South London - need some advice

Labrador has had conjunctivtis / infection for 2 weeks - not clearing up fully - mainly in one eye. Vet has had her under general anthestic this week to have a good look and nothing obvious causing problem , back today and still slighly inflammed . Back again next week - they may refer us to specialist vet .to take a look.

So it would either be specialist in Wimbledon or Byfleet - (Stone Vet Centre / Rosemount Vet Centre)

Anyone has any experince of either of these centres ?

Any experince of any eye specialist - would be interesting to know what to expect ?

What would be the cost likely to be -we are covered by insurance but will have to pay up front. ( I can the arrange funds to be in place )

I can't really help Avantia but meant to post on your other thread you are having a worrying time. It is always so difficult when you are waiting for a diagnosis. I have no experience of eye specialists for dogs but my cat had to see one and his sight was saved by a fantastic vet who was extremely knowledgeable in eye conditions. Cost for the cat was a lot! but he had to have very intricate surgery on his retina £3000.00. One of my DD's was so impressed that she was allowed to watch further eye surgery on other cats and it has encouraged her to apply for vet school - so heres hoping we get the money back in kind one day!!!

I've been to an eye specialist with one of my girls - the one we were recommended also does the KC/BVA eye testing scheme as well as the specialist eye work. It might be worth doing a bit of research about who does that in your area because there aren't that many good eye specialists about. We had to travel quite a distance to see him.

I'd also do a bit of research here. There is an enormous amount of labrador and specialist knowledge there which may help.

It was much like going to a regular optician tbh. He had the same sort of equipment which he used to closely inspect the eyes - and he didn't need to sedate the dog to do it [magic?]. Our trip was to check for defects in the eye and vision, but it was quite straightforward.

I must say that I have looked at bit more at the Stone Vet Centre and the specialist vet there seems very well qualified ( as am sure all others are )

May I ask Daisy what the problem was with your lab?

I know both centres (I'm a vet) - we refer to Rosemount as it's nearer for us. I am sure either would be absolutely fine. Jeff Yellerly at Rosemount has about 30 years experience and will have seen ten gazillion Labs in his time, as Surrey is full of them. Stone Lion probably has fancier equipment. I don't know what the costs would be, but either should be prepared to give you an idea of the initial consultation fee. Really, either would be fine, I am sure.

He was looking for evidence of retinal dysplasia. And to find out why she has recurrent eye infections.

She is an unusual labrador who the vet is convinced has a genetic skeletal problem. There was no evidence of the retinal dysplasia though and no physical reason for the eye infections.
