CSJ Dog foods

Hi all I have been looking online for different dog foods, Ive got 2 border collies a 2 year old one and his daughter a 15 week old pup.

The puppuy will eat anything that is put in front of her, the older one how either is a fussy git. He will eat a food for about 2 weeks then get bored of it we have tried everything. Dried food wet food all with the same response.

I had a look at CSJ and thery sent me thorugh some free samples we got some Dem bones treats which he loves which is a miracle as he doesn't do treats normally either. Natural champ, CP21, Natural monster mix, and compleate tripe. I've looked at their prices and teh seem very reasonable even taking into account delivery charges. Has anyone got any experiance of this company. If i find my older collie will eat it i will gladly buy it.

Yep, it's the food which the rescue I help at uses (apart from dogs on specialist diets/epileptics and so on) and I understand is popular with many other rescues too. We can both report favourably on it although there were concerns about some very small metal fiings in one batch, which seems to have been rectified since.

For what it is, a middle of the road quality, mid range price food it's fine. You may care to get some samples of other foods - I'd say try Fish4Dogs or Angells - and see if pooch likes those. If so you could have 2 types on hand so that you can alternate brands and prevent food-boredom taking over.

The Border Collie rescue I help with uses it - CSJ is one of their recommended food for BC's because of the lack of additives and crap. I have found that my BC's get a "bit sniffy" with it when they eat it long term, they get fed up of it and refuse to eat it unless they have to.

Another good dog food is Gellert "Hypo-allergenic" - either fish & rice, lamb & rice or chicken and rice. The Fish & Rice is most popular in this house, my dogs don't really like the chicken & rice and will eat lamb and rice if they have to.

The secret with Border Collies is to feed foods that have no additives/E-numbers in. And for Gods sake, DO NOT feed them Bakers Complete!!

I use CP21 for my 2 BCs, have done for several years. They look great and love it. I either get it delivered or pick it up from a supplier at a show.

Thanks for the replys lots of positive things then im going to try my adult bc on the diffrent samples and see which ones he likes. If it is something that he will eat then im happy to buy it.

Out of interest quiettiger whats wrong with bakers compleate my adult bc has had that before but then again hes tried eevrything before at one point or another lol.

Putting your dog on Bakers Complete is like feeding your child McDonalds and Fruit Shoots as a permanent diet. It has 13 different E-numbers and a further 29 various other additives in it and it is known to cause hyperactivity and dietary sensitivity in dogs. Although that information is anecdotal, rather than scientific, we've seen far, far, far too many Border Collies (and other dogs) to mention that have been fed Bakers and have been hyperactive lunatics. Change their diet to a non-additive one, and the change in behaviour is often immediate.

Wiccaweys Border Collie Rescue states explicitly in their adoption contract that the adopter is not to feed Bakers Complete because of the crap in it.

Would you feed your dog a food which contains THIRTEEN E numbers?

Now, it's the law that dog food manufacturers have to state on their packaging for any bags over 10kg EVERY ingredient. They used to be able to say "EEC permitted colourants and preservatives". Now, here's the list for Bakers in full:

In more detail:

E320 - has been found to be tumour-producing when fed to rats. In human studies it has been linked with urticaria, angioedema and asthma

E321 - banned for use in food in Japan, Romania, Sweden, and Australia. The US has barred it from being used in infant foods. So bad McNasty's have voluntarily eliminated it from their products.

E310 - Banned from children's foods in the US because it is thought to cause the blood disorder methemoglobinemia

E172 - Banned in Germany

E132 - Can cause skin sensitivity, a rash similar to nettle rash, itching, nausea, high blood pressure and breathing problems. One of the colours that the Hyperactive Children's Support Group recommends be eliminated from the diet of children.
Prohibited in Norway.

E102 - TARTRAZINE - A trial on 76 children diagnosed as hyperactive, showed that tartrazine provoked abnormal behaviour patterns in 79% of them

E110 - Sunset Yellow (E110) has been found to damage kidneys and adrenals when fed to laboratory rats. It has also been found to be carcinogenic when fed to animals

E104 - One of the colours that the Hyperactive Children's Support Group recommends be eliminated from the diet of children. Banned in Australia, Japan, Norway and the United States.

E171 - Banned in Germany

E153 - Banned as a food additive in the United States of America. Suspected as a carcinogenic agent.

And which food contains all these? Yep, Bakers Complete.

As you can guess, this is a bit of a soapbox topic for me and I am in no way having a go at you, because you asked a perfectly innocent question, which I recognise. :) But you did ask...

My mum is a stockist for them and it's well known in the shooting/working/agility dog scene. Within a week or two of her dogs (14 of them) going on it you could see a big difference in coat quality and overall appearance of the dogs.

I'd definitely recommend it

Well moment of truth I'm about to try my dog on it now i'll get back to you with the result.

That's what the lady we got her from was feeding them, and other people have recommended it too.

What other dry food for puppies is there at a similar price? (£7 for 3k bag, sometimes £5-£6 if on offer). TBH, she's getting on fine with it and I haven't had any problems with her, but after reading your list, I think I'll see what else there is on the market!
No wonder she scoffs it down, if it's the dog equivalent to McD's and Fruit shoots she must have similar tastes to DS

CSJ is the dogs as far as I am concerned,loved by pooch & us in this house.We have a rescue sprollie (springer/BC X) & she came to us on bakers,we may as well been feeding her on the originl blue smarties with a caffeine/tartrazine side order,hyper was an understatement.

The change in feeding her CSJ champ is huge,we have a calm & happy dog (well as calm as a sprollie can be)

Icouldnot recommend it enought to be honest :o

All I can say is wow I've just done as they said and put a bit of each sample down for trh dog to have a sniff and and see what he liked best. I have never seen my collie in teh 2 years that we have had him eat food liek he did with those samples. He really liked the champ one and the compleate tripe one.

But he did also eat the other 2 so we've now got a choice of 4 foods that he will eat so will definatly be putting an order in with them. Good price aswell the champ one is £16 delivered for 15kg.

Well I've just had a look at the CSJ website, and I can't believe how much good value it is, even with the shipping charge, much cheaper than 'Mc'Bakers complete! I will definitely be trying it out!

Pintofstella - it'snot just the price,dogs are calmer & ours has the most beautiful coat with excellent muscle definition.

We either pick ours up from a supplier if we are in the area or order online,win win situation as far as we are concerned :o

I fed my cocker spaniel puppy on Bakers for 2 days.He really liked it ,but became doubly incontinent and was weeing 3 times every 5 minutes.He also became hyperactive and uncontrollable.I read up on it and then threw the rest away and switched to natures diet.Being a scientist and fairly cynical i would never have believed the change in behaviour beforehand.Makes you wonder what effect food has on my dc's [have got 4 naughty ones!].
