When I was a little girl, we had a pet budgie, just a baby. He had to go back to the breeder because he was so unhappy away from the aviary that he was plucking his own feathers out. I sobbed myself to sleep the night before he left, but it took about five minutes for me to fall in love with the replacement; your dc will be fine.

You've arranged for Duke to go to a no-kill rescue, from where he'll find a new, loving family. And when the time is right, you and the girls can choose a new rescue dog to love.

Everyone wins.

But I know how hard I would find it to part with my dog, so I understand your feelings, especially as Duke was Neil's dog.

he is such the sweetest dog in the house

when we got him he was only 7 months old and gecko was only just passed two

he loved them all completely

gecko used to hold him to walk and invite him into small boxes with her and he would ccram himself into cardboard boxes with her and be stroked for ages

he sleeps on the end of al the girls beds in turn
you cculd predit whos bed he was going to sleep in next week

he iss lovely and kind and gentle and loves his balls

I just feel awful, I wish we could have done better by him

Then I'm sure he'll soon find another loving family. Your girls will get over him, although they will miss him in the short term; could you maybe get them a smaller pet, maybe a rabbit? (My other childhood pet.)

Fifis25StottieCakes · 08/07/2011 12:57

I got a springer spaniel from the pound who i had for a year. My eldest dd loved the very bones of him.

He was untrained, a nightmare with other dogs, i couldnt walk him on or off the lead. He mauled a womans dog. I didnt have the experience at the time to train him.

She howled for a week and still has a photo of him on her cabnet. She was 3 when i gave him back to the pound. She is 9 now and still asks about him.

I wouldnt take the kids with you when you take Duke back. I was a wreck when i handed my dog back. I told dd he had gone with santa to be his helper.

To this day i still worry about what happened to him.

TrinIsASadSpottyFatRhino · 08/07/2011 13:03

That happened with my rabbit too, the New Year's Eve I was 15. :(

SecretNorbertFix · 08/07/2011 13:08

Duke is.not going to.be.put down. he is getting the help he needs to address his behavioural issues and find a new family who can help him. you have all had a difficult 2years but duke needs some thing more to help him. you have donewell by him and.loved him. no one can deny that.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 08/07/2011 13:08

I feel sorry for the dog more than me. I just hope he got rehomed. I always hoped he ended up on a big farm somewhere with ooodles of space, realsitically he probably didnt.

Yours will be fine if you are taking him to a rehomiing centre. I just handed mine straight back to the pound which looking back was a bad move.

TrinIsASadSpottyFatRhino · 08/07/2011 13:31

need to leave soon to get his injections

coccyx · 08/07/2011 20:31

Sometimes you are just not at the right point in your life to do things. You are doing the best thing for your dog and for you. Must be very hard though, big hugs.
I am sure in time you will have space and time in your heart/home for another dog.

GrimmaTheNome · 08/07/2011 21:37

Well done. You and your kids are doing this as well as you possibly can - which will help you all deal with it.

TrinIsASadSpottyFatRhino · 09/07/2011 16:45

he's gone back and already I can feel calm in the house

I cant stop crying and the girls are very sad but it was very stressful worrying about him all the time
