My normally well behaved lab has decided to start stealing food? She's 2 1/2 and has not done this since she was a pup. In the last week she has done a bit of counter surfing , woofed down half of a family sized rhubarb crumble and today she has pinched the pizza my grandson left on the table whilst he popped to the loo. Anyone have any idea's what we can do to stop this getting worse?

Not leave any food anywhere within your dog's reach.

Dogs are opportunists. She has worked out that she can steal food from counters and the table and will continue to look there (when your back is turned I'll bet Grin) and do so until she realises that there is no food there to find.

You will have to be vigilant and put everything away until her counter surfing stops, or put her in another room while you eat to prevent rogue table stealing. This may take a while.

Any ideas how to feed a cat with a counter surfing dog around? We already feed the cat on the washing machine to stop the dogs wolfing it down but Poppy has recently learned to jump on to the counters/ washing machine from a standing start Hmm. She won't do it when we're there, but if we go out of the room and forget....

Do I just have to make sure she can't get out there? It seems a shame for the cat because he's then just shut out there.

Thanks Slubber, come to think of it we always used to send her to the hall when we were eating so we have lapsed a bit in our training which our dog has now made us realise is not good. Oh well, rule book out again, lol.
Music, we have had the same problem; our dog loved the cats food...fun isnt it ...... We stopped her by filling a can up with some small stones and dropping them on the floor when she attempted to jump up at the counter which would startle her and in the end she linked the noise with the cat food and stopped going for it.

Our cats are fed upstairs to stop the dog eating their food.
