Sad But the right choice if he was suffering. Had my 7 yr old lab cross (also a rescue) put to sleep just over a year ago and it was awful. Am very sorry for your loss

ilovesprouts · 20/04/2011 20:09

i know how you feel i had to have my dog put down 6yrs ago :(

kid · 20/04/2011 20:21

Its always hard when you are parted from a pet, there is nothing you can do to prepare for it. But, even though we know its going to hurt when they do go, it doesn't stop us from having them in the first place because they bring so much love and joy in to our lives.

Thinking of you x

usualsuspect · 20/04/2011 20:28

Thank you for your kind words

Sorry - as kid said the love and joy they bring is immeasurable, but then the pain when they go is so hard.

AA Milne Winnie the Pooh said 'How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.' I always think that applies to pet ownership

Ephiny · 20/04/2011 20:44

Sorry to hear this, I can only imagine how much you must miss him - though I'm sure you did give him a good home and a very happy life for the time he was with you. If only they could stay with us forever :(

Vallhala · 20/04/2011 21:01

I'm so, so sorry. Take comfort in knowing how much you did for that little rescue boy and what you saved him from... as well as the fact that by giving him a home you almost certainly gave another dog a chance of life. Each rescue dog who finds a home leaves behind a kennel for a pound dog to find sanctuary in.

Take it easy on yourself.

Val x

SecretNutellaFix · 20/04/2011 21:03

My puppy died last year, I was in pieces for a long time. But, as time goes on you cry less and smile more. It does sound crazy to people that don't have pets, but to me, the pain of losing my hairy baby was literally unbearable. I was in tears just last night thinking about him but today I was able to talk about him.

just let the tears fall, you will gain nothing by keeping them in. If people don't understand your feeling of loss, they clearly haven't been lucky enough to know the joy of owning a dog.

Message me if you want to talk or just talk on here, it will help I am sure. I did lot a of posting when my pup died, I can't read it now though as it makes me cry even more!

Scuttlebutter · 20/04/2011 23:19

Usual, I am so sorry for your loss. Your dog spent many happy years with you experiencing love, devotion and safety, and when the time came you were brave and responsible. Nobody can do more than that.

coccyx · 24/04/2011 18:51

Exactly what Scuttlebutter said. so sorry, know its horrible time
