He's been with them for NINE YEARS and they're not even giving him a chance with the new baby? Words fail me.

You cannot just discard animals after nine years.

They can and they do, sadly. I recently was asked to find a rescue place for a 4 year old GSD the owner had had since a pup and who they wanted rid of because he IGNORED their toddler and hence they considered the child at risk from the dog. It was all I could do not to call them and call them the c's that they are.

I see this so often it's almost unbelievable. It makes me furious, it really does.

Poor little chap.

If he was in our neck of the woods I'd send this link to my parents.

Yes Reality, people are indeed cunts.

I really don't know, the day we picked Oscar up a beautiful collie was being dropped off by a family as they couldn't find care for her whilst they went away and they wanted to go on holiday more often :( Luckily she was chosen that day and rehomed a week later by another family ( the manager seemed a bit put out as he had wanted to take her home Grin )

Oscar was apparently rehomed because his owner was moving, I can't understand it at all he is the most amazing puppy, their loss however is our gain.

My fil recently said he understands dogs better than people, I agree.

FlorenceDaphne · 13/04/2011 12:14

I just don't understand the equation: baby on the way= get rid of nine year old family member. And not even to a friend or family member, but to random people from the internet! And they got a dog, so they must LIKE dogs... my mind boggles.

Why don't they realise that animals are commitments for up to twenty years? I paid a hundred quid yesterday to sort out my cat's cystitis. Was it annoying to pay? Yes. But did I take her anyawy without a moment's hesitation? Yes. Would I give her to a random from the internet if I had a baby? No.

I agree, some people do seem to rehome their dogs for pretty lame reasons, but please don't judge everyone who does!

I had to rehome my dog when I left an abusive marriage. The only alternative would have been to have left her with a violent and abusive man who couldn't look after himself, let alone a dog. I suppose using your logic though, I should have stayed and taken the risk of being beaten to death, at which point my dog would still have needed to be rehomed, along with my children.

FlorenceDaphne · 13/04/2011 12:17

For goodness' sake, Tally, of course you shouldn't have stayed to be beaten to death. You dealt with the situation you had to. I hope you're ok now.

I saw a case a while ago where the dog was being rehomed because he had chased a neighbour's cat that got into the garden, and the owner decided as a result of this she could no longer trust him around her children. Also recently dog ended up in rescue because he seemed a bit 'anxious and unsettled' when new baby was brought home from the hospital and they assumed this meant he was a danger to the baby, rather than just needing a bit of time to get used to a new family member in the house.

And there's also the one where family live in a small flat/house, have another baby and 'suddenly' realise they have no room (or time) for the dog any more. It's just outrageous, like asking for your older child to be taken into care because you've got no space now you have the new baby.

Of course there are genuine reasons dogs need to be rehomed, like Tally's case (what an awful situation and of course you did the right thing), or where the owner dies or becomes too ill or frail to look after the dog properly, or financial difficulties where people lose their house or get evicted and can't find dog-friendly accommodation to go to. But it would be nice if rescue places could be kept for these dogs, not needed by those whose owners just couldn't be bothered and see a dog as a disposable thing.

Vallhala · 13/04/2011 13:23

Not what I said (or meant) at all, TallyB. Far from it.

coccyx · 13/04/2011 14:35

I am fostering dogs out here in saudi and find it unbelivable the reasons people dump/sell their dogs.
Very hard to find SUITABLE homes for the rescues but its a great feeling when i do

ProfBrianCox · 13/04/2011 18:12

My mother got her lovely old spaniel crumpet off a neighbour who was going to take it to a rescue home because she got new lighter coloured carpet and could now see dog hair on it.
There is alot of twats out there.

FruitShootsChocolateThieves · 13/04/2011 18:16

most stupid reason I got
"he's got to go, he's the wrong height for the coffee table and keeps knocking everything off it with his tail"

Hmm I would have liked to write 'owners were knobheads' on the 'reason for rehoming' section on his card!
Melly19MummyToBe · 13/04/2011 18:20

What's a spaniel crumpet?

Some people have such pathetic reasons for getting rid of their dogs.

I can't wait till I've had this baby and when she's old enough, we can FINALLY go and get a dog! Will have to trawl rescue centres for one that doesn't malt too much though as I'm allergic.

Melly19MummyToBe · 13/04/2011 18:21

Oh my gosh. I'm such a prat Blush Crumpet was the dogs name? Sorry, pregnant brain :o

EllAEllO · 13/04/2011 18:26

Poor little dog Sad

Someone on gumtree the other week was asking if anyone had a dog to swap for baby clothes Hmm
Some people are just knobheads.

Agree that some people are knob heads Sad

but rofl at spaniel crumpets.... Grin that has really made me laugh!

thebestisyettocome · 13/04/2011 21:54

I saw a great organisation the other week which fosters dogs while their owners escape abusive relationships Smile One fosterer spoke about how overjoyed some children were to be reunited with their dog once they'd been sorted out with permanent accommodation.

Gonzo33 · 14/04/2011 11:16

Grrr, owner is clearly a throbber.

I would absolutely love a dog right now, but we cannot get one (sensible head) because we live in Cyprus due to my husbands job. When we are more settled and have our own home (not long - am counting the weeks!) we will get one, and then another later on when husband has retired from this job.

There are at least 4 rescue centres that I know of where we live. They are full of puppies and dogs of varying ages due to the fact that the last rotation left their animals with them, or dumped them. Our rotation have been equally irresponsible and at least 65% have gone and taken puppies from these rescues that they are not bothering to train, without thinking about the consequences. So when they are rotated back to UK or Germany (which will not accept the vast majority of these puppies due to the breed) they will just dump them back on these rescue ctrs or on the streets. It infuriates me that people treat their animals like second class citizens and not like a member of their family. I have complained to the "powers that be" here but they are not really able to stop this from happening.

Sorry to hijack the thread - needed a rant!

Gonzo33 · 14/04/2011 11:18

Oh and I should say that the people that live in this country treat their animals like shite. My friend found a dog tethered to the back wheel of a car the other day and the driver was going to drive off until the dog died. Thankfully she took it in, but it will have to go to a rescue and they are beginning to pts because of the sheer volume.

Very very very sad situation

emptyshell · 14/04/2011 14:58

It makes me indescribably angry - like the dog or cat is the baby prototype and now the real deal's come along (and in some case they're booting Fido out on his ear just seconds after sperm meets egg pretty much), the companion who's been with them for years is getting the shove. I always want to ask them if they're going to kick their 9 year old human out when they get pregnant again in case big brother pulls baby sister's hair or something.

Maybe it's me being coloured by my own circumstances - but I cannot fucking stand people who use the baby card to get out of their obligations - and that includes the fucking obligation you made to that animal when you took it on. Just see it time and time again "I'm pregnant - need to get rid of the cat"... "I'm about to have a baby - dog free to good home"... the animal isn't even given a chance! Hell, one reason behind me WANTING to get a dog was to give any child of mine (hah hah fat fucking chance since the last miscarriage wrecked any shred of fertility I had left and the steaming pile of shit that is the NHS doesn't give... a steaming pile of shit) the chance TO grow up in a home with animals - to be happy and confident around them and to get everything they can give back... I remember all the secrets and teenage angst I confided in my childhood pets!

kid · 14/04/2011 15:20

If somebody doesn't want their dog, they will find ANY excuse to get rid of it. Those poor animals that are no longer wanted get thrown out like the rubbish. I just don't understand how someone could give up a dog that has been part of their family. It's not something I could ever do myself.

Of course there will be special circumstances where an owner can not keep a pet. These situations are often unavoidable (abusive relationship, death, housing situation) but the people who just change their mind should be banned from owning pets.

Vallhala · 15/04/2011 12:45

Today's latest example of cuntishness, an appeal for a rescue place for:

"16 month old male Husky due to be pts on Monday. Urgently needs a rescue space. Has been dumped on owner by son who is leaving the country on Sunday."

Said son needs horsewhipping. Angry
