URGENT! LACTATING BITCH QUERY - PLEASE HELP!

BCBG · 31/03/2011 21:36

My spaniel bitch had her first litter of six last night and has been panting heavily all day. I had the vet check her but he said apart from a slight rise in temperature and being a 'bit panty' he thought she was ok......has anyone else experienced this? i am quite worried. Thanks

Did he scan for any more pups? Did you get the same number of placentas to pups?

Very panty can be a sign of hypocalcaemia. If she is not settling I would have her seen again tonight.

Thanks for replies! Yes he palpated her and said he thought she was clear and that hypocalcaemia wouldnt develop this early? I wondered if it was pain due to uterine contractions but I cant find anyone to tell me if they've experienced the same.

If she is still panting today and her temperature is raised then I would have her scanned.

Importantly, check her discharge isn't smelly, if it is call the vet again.

Thanks...she seems better today, still a bit panty but only when they are feeding. Im exhausted!
