My stupid father has gave his dog meds for humans- need info, please

Dog apparently has been making noises as if something is stuck in his throat/sneezing for 2 days now. My father just called me to say that he gave him lots of meds, including aspirin Hmm.

Called my mum (they're divorced and she's a responsible dog owner) and she said that he should take the dog to the vet and that meds for humans can actually kill dogs, but she doesn't know which ones.

Will be calling my father in a few minutes- does anyone know about which meds are dangerous- I'm guessing he gave him aspirin and maybe paracetamol or ibuprofen- so I can relay info.

know about which meds

Christ almighty. Please get on the phone to your father and tell him to get the dog to a vet emergency clinic asap.

Both aspirin and ibuprofen can be poisonous to dogs. Paracetamol can also be toxic in some cases, and in any case should only be given if recommended and at the right dose.

For you and for all others I would strongly recommend bookmarking http://www.vpisuk.co.uk/portal/CommonPoisons/tabid/119/Default.aspx this site which is the government's own veterinary poisons bureau and which gives helpful, authoritative advice on common poisons in the UK, for all animals not just dogs.

The dog is in danger now. P lease please do not delay.

Quick google for you

Asprin

Paracetamol

Ibuprofen

It sounds like this ibuprofen would be the biggest worry, find out exactly what he has been given.

Hopefully someone else will be along in a minute. I think a call to the vet as soon as you know what the dog has been given would be best.

X-posts with Scuttlebutter.

winnybella · 24/03/2011 19:34

Right, thanks, will call him now.

Although he's on his boat in a middle of nowhere in the South of France- he doesn't have a car and has just run out of credit on his phone-hence me calling him back.

FFS. Bloody idiot. And this 2 days after picking the dog from a dog pound where he spent a week, because he let him run loose around the port.

Thank you, WTWTA- hope he didn't give him ibuprofen. Calling now.

I hope the dog will be ok.

Is there any way you could take the dog away from your father?

Scuttlebutter · 24/03/2011 19:38

My other concern is the cocktail effect if he has given more than one drug, and also if he has given quantitites that are not appropriate to the dog's weight ie human levels of doseage.

One of ours has paracetamol as part of her pain management regime but it is a carefully calibrated dose for her weight and was prescribed by a vet who was aware of her other meds and their possible interaction.

I just hope and pray that it is not too late for this poor dog.

coccyx · 24/03/2011 19:39

do keep us posted.
My dog had the stuck in throat thing when we first took her on, was kennel cough

Cocyx, yes my first thought too, especially as he had just come from a pound.

winnybella · 24/03/2011 19:44

2 paracetamol-1g
1 paracetamol-don't know the paracetamol content
maxilase-main ingridient alpha-amylase
apap-which I think is also paracetamol

Stupid arsehole is saying dog's is fine.

OP posts:
winnybella · 24/03/2011 19:45

coccyx-what is a kennel cough?

OP posts:
winnybella · 24/03/2011 19:51

oh, just googled. Can progress to pneumonia without treatment. Fuck.

OP posts:
winnybella · 24/03/2011 19:53

Dog is a Belgian shepherd-so quite big. Still from the links WTWTW he overdosed on paracetamol.

OP posts:
WhereTheWildThingsWere · 24/03/2011 19:58

Kennel cough usually very mild and self-limiting, would not worry about that.

Have you spoken to him yet? Can he get the dog to a vet?

winnybella · 24/03/2011 19:59

Am speaking to him now. He won't take him to the vet. He thinks he'll be fine. Look at post above for what he gave him-seems a lot to me.

OP posts:
winnybella · 24/03/2011 20:00

sorry, the second med was some German one with paracetamol

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 24/03/2011 20:03

My maths is shit, but that looks too much to risk to me.

Scuttlebutter · 24/03/2011 20:06

Winny, please tell your dad that poisoning symptoms can take some time to come on however, the faster he takes the dog to a vet the sooner this can be sorted out. If he waits till the dog is ill/unconscious, then the dog will probably die (possibly in great pain).

TidyDancer · 24/03/2011 20:10

Vet. Definitely.

Your dad is being entirely irresponsible.

Best of luck dealing with this.

Poor dog. :(

winnybella · 24/03/2011 20:11

He won't take him.
I fucking hate him.
I would take the dog away if I could.

OP posts:
TidyDancer · 24/03/2011 20:12

Is he refusing because he doesn't think it's that serious (it is) or because he just doesn't care?

winnybella · 24/03/2011 20:13

Some websites say 75mg per kilo. some 250 as a toxic dose.
If 75 the dog is in danger.

He won't take him, though. Am still on the phone with him.

OP posts:
winnybella · 24/03/2011 20:13

Because he thinks the dog will be fine.
