Dog apparently has been making noises as if something is stuck in his throat/sneezing for 2 days now. My father just called me to say that he gave him lots of meds, including aspirin Hmm.

Called my mum (they're divorced and she's a responsible dog owner) and she said that he should take the dog to the vet and that meds for humans can actually kill dogs, but she doesn't know which ones.

Will be calling my father in a few minutes- does anyone know about which meds are dangerous- I'm guessing he gave him aspirin and maybe paracetamol or ibuprofen- so I can relay info.

My dog has a touch of kennel cough atm, as just resued him a few weeks ago. Vet advised to give child dose of benylin.
Obv not very helpful now.

I have just hang up on him.

He shouldn't own a dog. God.

He almost certainly has overdosed the dog. Paracetamol causes liver damage that takes days if not weeks to cause a problem. The drug that counteracts this needs to be given quickly before the paracetamol binds to the cells in the liver. A vets practice will probably have to purchase this drug from a human hospital ( we had to when our clients dog raided the drug cabinet). Intravenous fluids will be needed for at least 24 hours. It will then need to be followed up with regular blood tests at least weekly to monitor the liver for at least a couple of months.

Winny, Lizcat is a vet, if you didn't know. Please PLEASE pass on what she has said to your father. I'm guessing he's reluctant to attend because he's broke?

Could your mother have any influence over him or any other family members?

GentleOtter · 24/03/2011 21:11

Is there some way of contacting the RSPCA who could intervene even in France?
He sounds astonishingly irresponsible and uncaring about the dog.

winnybella · 24/03/2011 21:18

No, there's no contact between him and the rest of the family. He sails around Europe and restores boats for a living.

That's the thing- when he told me the dog was missing last week I thought that if I found it (because I had to search on the net for rescues and dog pounds in the area he's in) in a no-kill rescue I would probably not tell my father that I have found him.

But it was in a dog pound that he was in and so I was afraid he would be put to sleep.

I live in Paris, in a flat, no dog parks here, you can't let the dog off the leash in parks, have 2 cats, 2 dcs (one 2 yo)-only a problem because it's a fairly large dog that had no training whatsoever so a bit reluctunt wrt the 2 yo iyswim- I don't think I could provide the dog with the care it deserves.

OTOH, it sure would be better than what my father is providing Sad

Update if anyone's interested

Apparently the dog ate only about half of the meds that my father has crushed into his food, so hopefully he'll be alright.

Father promised to never give him any meds for human consumption.

Am a bit relieved.

Winnybella if your Dads dog is very lucky, it will come out of this unscathed, for now, but liver damage might already be done.

Your Dad needs to know this is not ok. Giving human meds to animals is not something that should be done, unless on advice of Vets.

Fingers crossed for this dog, I want to bitch slap your father! (sorry)

Angry
winnybella · 25/03/2011 11:28

My sentiments exactly, Jax.

Bluddy- I guess he gave the dog what he himself takes when he has a cold iyswim?

I did some calculations and if indeed the dog only ate half, he might be alright.

I will probably visit him in a month or so for a couple of days and will have a good look at how he treats the dog.

But I can't have a Belgian shepherd in a flat with no parks nearby, can I? Sad He wouldn't give him up anyway, I don't think.
