My dh and I rehomed an almost 2 year old dobermann about 6 weeks ago. She is an absolutely cracking dog, so loving and affectionate however there are a few issues we could do with ironing out. She hasn't been greatly socialised due to health problems of her last owner so is pretty much like a giant puppy who is excited by everything particularly other dogs. Her recall is excellent when there are no distractions but if she sees another dog when off the lead she bolts towards it and doesn't take a blind bit of notice when I shout her name. There has been a couple of times when on the lead she has gone to approach another dog and they have snarled and growled, in this situation she has growled and snarled back and I have had to pull her away from the other dog. This has only ever been her response to signs of aggression but would love to get to the point where she doesn't react (as much). Any advise would be gratefully received, we have had dobermanns before but they have never shown any defensive aggression. Should I be encouraging her to approach other dogs or keeping her away, is it the right approach to try and distract her with treats as soon as we see another dog?
