here

is the dog growling? is it trying to smile as it sees this is why humans do? is it some kind of guilt behaviour? can dogs even feel guilt?

I'm intrigued

Loads of owners ARE incredibly unhelpful, SC.

Most of the time it's simple ignorance, but a depressingly high proportion of the time, they're just being arseholes. Round here, anyway :(

Where do you think the expression "hangdog" comes from?! Mine lower their heads and look away if I come in to where they sleep and I know instantly if they've nicked something from the worktop side. The cat food is on it (at the back, in the corner and protected by a piece of wood) and occasionally by some superdoggy stretchy they can reach it.

I don't have to say or do anything, they just sit there looking guilty as hell - it doesn't stop them though!
